Introduction To The Travel Essay

This is a workshop in travel writing both for those new to the workshop format and those eager to return. This is a genre, not unlike a place, with a long history and imprecise borders; it crosses paths with place writing, adventure narratives, scientific and journalistic reports, memoir, and the road story, among others. In this course we recognize that travel is not so much a matter of distance as of discovery, of making sense not just of novel experience but of how experience is perceived and understood.
The course pursues the art and craft of the travel essay through critical in-class workshopping of student essays and discussion of assigned texts. We’ll reference Robin Hemley’s notions of immersive writing and subjectivity as we work towards thoughtful, compelling prose. Each essayist will have two workshop dates to share their writing (up to 25 pages each time) and receive written feedback from their classmates and instructor.
