by Writing Workshops Staff

Workshop alum Lauren Flaker was recently published in The New York Times Tiny Love Stories column and you can read her piece, "Thanks, Dad", here. This is the first piece of creative writing Lauren has ever submitted!

Lauren is a writer who lives in Missouri and works online. Her work is inspired by her family and travels. We're excited for you, Lauren, and thrilled to read more of your work!

Find out more about Lauren and her work below:

Describe your work (influences, interests, etc.) and what you're working on now.

My writing focuses on personal essays in the humorist style. I'm interested in exploiting my family for all their weirdness through stories of childhood, love and life. I'm currently writing about my appendicitis. My favorite author is David Sedaris.

What are your short term (1 year) and long term writing goals (5 years from now)?

Short term: set up a writing website, have two stories published. Long term: write a collection of short stories

What class(es) did you take/are you taking with Writing Workshops?

Personal Essay workshop with Diana Spechler and others.

What did you enjoy most about your class(es) with Writing Workshops?

It's so nice to have a community of fellow writers to hold you accountable and provide meaningful feedback. I've always had at least one thing I've taken away from each workshop I've been a part of, but the community - even for classes through a portal without video - is what makes the biggest difference.
