Led by Sarah Carson, whose poetry has appeared in Diagram, Guernica, The Missouri Review, and more. Sarah is the author of three full-length poetry collections, including How to Baptize a Child in Flint, Michigan (Persea Books, November 2022).

This generative workshop is for writers of short works (poetry, flash fiction, microessays, and the like) who want to mine their imaginations and start some new work!

In this generative workshop, we’ll reflect on a new short piece of writing every day, as well as readings and advice from writers who write across genres, like Kim Addonizio and Ocean Vuong. Then we’ll use prompts based on those readings to start something of our own.

You also have opportunities to share each day’s work with your classmates and submit one piece each week for a group critique.

By the end of the month, you’ll have a treasure trove of works-in-progress to keep tinkering with. On the final day, we’ll discuss the power of revision and where you can take your work once class ends.

During our 30 days together, you’ll learn:

  • To find inspiration in your daily life and the world around you
  • How reading the work of other writers can inform your own writing practice
  • To push yourself to write through your writing blocks and fears

By the end of the course, you have:

  • A new awareness of the variety of short forms, voices and techniques available to you
  • A portfolio of newly-generated work on a variety of topics and themes
  • A cohort of new peers to stay connected with
PAYMENT OPTIONS:
You can pay for the course in full or use Shop Pay or Affirm to pay over time with equal Monthly Payments. Both options are available at checkout.

ONLINE COURSE STRUCTURE:

This class is entirely asynchronous which means you complete the weekly assignments on your own schedule. There are no set meeting times in order to allow for greater participation; your cohort will consist of writers from across different time zones, which allows for a wonderful diversity of voices.

Along with your weekly deadlines there is plenty of interaction with Sarah and your peers within Wet Ink, our dedicated online classroom. Craft materials, lectures, reading assignments, and writing prompts are all available through the online classroom. Students also post work and provide and receive feedback within the online classroom environment.

You can finish the work as you see fit week-to-week, so it is perfect for any schedule. Each week, discussion questions are inspired by the assigned readings and topics in the lecture notes. Students are encouraged to take these wherever is most compelling and/or useful for them. Sarah engages with these discussions throughout the week, and you will receive feedback from all assigned writing activities.
