Led by industry-leading literary agent at Trident Media Group Mark Gottlieb.

There are many manifestations a book can take—far beyond what we conventionally think of simply as a “book.” Beyond conventional eBooks or printed books in the U.S.,  two of the primary subsidiary rights editions books are often published in within major trade book publishing are audiobooks and foreign editions. This seminar will focus on what writers making their way through the publishing process will need to know about these important aspects of book publishing. Audiobooks and foreign rights ultimately comprise a large portion of an author’s income revenue stream.

It’s every writer’s dream to see their writing adapted into an audiobook or published widely overseas, but how does one make strides toward those goals? This class will explore:

What publishing is looking for in terms of writing and writers they can collaborate with on an audiobook or through a foreign translation.

How written works are typically sold and adapted into audiobooks and foreign translations.

Ways in which publishing has moved away from independent audiobook acquisitions and the changing aspects of the foreign marketplace.

The licensing structure of audiobook deals and foreign deals.

The major international book fairs where foreign rights are sold and the happenings there.

The process of getting an audiobook or foreign edition made and the writer’s role before, during and after recording or translation.

What it truly means to have one’s work adapted for audio or translation.

Ways in which literary agencies work with audio publishers and foreign publishers.

How and more importantly—why to keep foreign rights during the book deal negotiation process.

Mark Gottlieb is a highly ranked literary agent both in overall deals and other individual categories. Using that same initiative and insight for identifying talented writers, he is actively building his own client list of authors. Mark Gottlieb is excited to work directly with authors, helping to manage and grow their careers with all of the unique resources that are available at book publishing’s leading literary agency, Trident Media Group. During his time at Trident Media Group, Mark Gottlieb has represented numerous New York Times bestselling authors, as well as award-winning authors, and has optioned and sold books to film and TV production companies. He previously ran the agency’s audiobook department, in addition to working in foreign rights. Mark Gottlieb is actively seeking submissions in all categories and genres and looking forward to bringing new and established authors to the curious minds of their future readers.
