Led by Carlos Greaves, an Afro-Latino engineer, writer, and filmmaker living in Boston. He teaches online satire writing at The Second City, and is a former writer for the Netflix Con Todo social media channel. His writing has been featured in The New Yorker, NPR, and he is a frequent contributor to the humor site McSweeney’s, where he’s written several of the site’s most-read articles in 2020, 2021, and 2022. He is also the author of Spoilers: Essays That Might Ruin Your Favorite Hollywood Movies.

Comedy is a craft that can be learned like any other.

This class will cover techniques for brainstorming comedic premises and finding satirical angles on even the most challenging subjects from recent news. We'll explore how to turn feelings of frustration and anger into fuel for writing humor pieces, and how to formulate jokes in ways that "punch up" and speak truth to power.

Note: Please bring one example of a satire piece on a difficult subject that you really enjoyed and bring one recent news story you would want to write about.
