Elissa Bassist is the editor of the “Funny Women” column on The Rumpus and the author of Hysterical, a semi-finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. As a founding contributor to The Rumpus, Elissa has written cultural and personal criticism since the website launched in 2009. Her next book, a comedy writing craft book, is forthcoming from Grand Central Publishing. Elissa teaches humor writing at The New School and elsewhere, and she is probably her therapist’s favorite.

Get to know Elissa in our Meet the Teaching Artist series.

Rejection is a constant in art, life, and love, and rejection is required to meet any goal. Yet, we're so afraid of it that we talk ourselves out of even trying. Though it can be brutal, rejection is also a blessing, a dark teacher, and nothing personal. Take it from an author, a long-time editor, a freelancer, and a teacher who knows. In two hours, we'll break down rejection to understand what it tells us and how it serves us. We'll also cover the easiest ways to avoid rejection; how to use rejection as feedback and fuel; and how to reduce rejection hangovers and work faster through setbacks.

Bottom line: Getting good at rejection is the secret to success, both professionally and romantically. Look forward to a lecture/sermon, handouts, writing exercises, a Q&A, and a lot of crying. By the end of class you'll realize that, in the words of comedian-turned-Dancing With the Stars contestant Kel Mitchell, “A setback just gets you ready for your comeback.”

  • Learn everything about rejection and its usefulness.
  • In-class brainstorming and commiserating to change your perspective on rejection.
  • Secrets from an editor on why writing is rejected and how to avoid the unavoidable.
  • Novella-length handouts that will inspire the uninspired and the totally defeated.

  • You write or create or date or otherwise put yourself "out there".

  • You want to redefine, rethink, reframe, and master rejection so you're free to do what you've always wanted to do.
  • You want to get out of your own way.
  • You want to expand your tools as an artist.

"The Art of Rejection was an excellent class, and I'll read all of the many handouts, now and forever. And I'll tell my friends that any class Elissa Bassist offers, take it."

"I can't thank Elissa enough for this masterclass. It couldn't have arrived at a better time as I start querying agents. I feel lowkey excited about racking up rejections now. I'm adopting an attitude of writer kink - REJECT ME, PLEASE!"

"…you have no idea how much your class helped me. I had given up after dozens of agent rejections of my novel, convinced I was guilty of trying to push trash on a world that didn’t need it. But I was so energized after your class that the following weekend I went into a frenzy of agent queries, because, no matter my novel’s faults, it’s not The Human Centipede, is it??!?!?!? I’ve had four manuscript requests since. Meanwhile, the other rejections coming in aren’t sending me into the fetal position anymore. Progress!"

"I thought I was kinda an expert on this topic, but I took the two-hour class with Elissa and learned a ton. Also, she was EXTREMELY GENEROUS with handouts and resources. Highly recommended!"

"Elissa saved me a therapist visit."

"I loved this class. Elissa was an extremely generous teacher/storyteller. I think listening to her talk about her experience/struggles to get words on the page was the most valuable part. I was amazed with Elissa’s ability to focus and maintain passion and energy for 3 straight hours. I was completely engaged in her personal writing journey and was satisfied with spending 3 hours listening to her speak." -former student

"This was a fun class! I found Elissa's personal takes and experiences in both the process and in finding a home for her writing most valuable. The process seems much more manageable to me now, and I would take another class with Elissa." -former student

"I heard about via Hippocampus Magazine. I'm so happy I found Elissa's class, which was filled with many small insights that added up to a lot. I left the class feeling inspired. Thank you." -former student

"Elissa's seminar exceeded my expectations! She provided real-world solutions for rejection and included so many thought-provoking prompts. This class was so rich with information it could have easily been a 6-week course."-former student

"This class was SO, SO GOOD!!!! By far, my favorite ever of the many many I have taken with Catapult, Grubstreet, Porch, CFF, and Big compliments! Thank you!!! Learned a lot and was furiously taking down notes; what marvelous advice and stories you have. Can't wait to read HYSTERICAL and the books that will come after that." -former student
