This Virtual Fiction Writing Workshop will offer enrichment and much needed face-to-face time with other teen writers.
NOTE: Teen writers do not need to live in the Dallas to Participate.
This is a workshop-style class in fiction writing, designed to provide a peer environment for teenaged writers (Grades 8-12). Led by Amber Royer, author of the Chocoverse Trilogy (Free Chocolate was named one of Barnes & Noble's 25 Debuts to Watch for in 2018), the class is designed to springboard teens who want to pursue writing as either a hobby or a potential career to a better understanding of how fiction is put together, and what opportunities they have to share it. During each class, the central focus will be the discussion of student work created as homework using prompts given before each session. Student fiction will be workshopped in a supportive, respectful, and constructively critical environment with the goal of improving an individual's voice and vision for their piece via traditional elements of craft. As time allows, there will be lectures on craft and discussion of published work.
This is a hands-on class, and the student will be able to take away with them a series of completed flash fiction pieces or sections of a longer work. There will be weekly reading assignments in the short story collection. Students are required to purchase a copy of 50 Great Short Stories edited by Milton Crane as the foundational text for this course.
NOTE: While some general topics will be similar to the week-long Teen Summer Class intensive, we will look at them from different angles.
