Workshop Meets Live via Zoom Saturdays, 1PM - 4PM CST

Taught by poet and novelist Joe Milazzo, Associate Editor for Southwest Review, this 8-Week Poetry Workshop will focus on mapping expression in poetic forms.

Poetry can be defined in terms of its music; as a song. But any given poem is also a construction, a shape with angles and contours all its own — a topography. In this workshop, we will focus our reading and writing on the forms of poetry as they are expressed across global cultures: forms canonical as well as novel, simple as well as complex, expansive as well as compressed, and open as well as closed.

We will examine examples of specific poetic forms, write within those forms and their rules, test the procedures of those forms, and, as a culminating or capstone exercise, invent our own forms for our own poetic occasions. Throughout, we will give consideration to how poetic forms not only frame "content" but also forge their own meanings independent of what they "contain."

Course takeaways will include turning in poems for workshop, receiving critical feedback from instructor and peers, practicing canonical forms, and creating (or inventing) your own poetic form.

NOTE: Instructor will provide all reading material via email.
