To succeed as a writer you need two things: to write and to cultivate an author brand. Especially for writers who plan to write a book, apply for a writing job or in other ways bring their talent to market - and even for emerging writers - it is never too early to understand positioning and brand. In today’s digital world, agents and publishers look for authors with a known brand, a digital presence, and a clear style.

This course is taught by Lynne Golodner, who knows well the worlds of writing and marketing - she has had 8 books published and written thousands of articles, worked as a journalist and for the last 15 years, run a marketing company. Lynne’s work has appeared in Saveur, Poets & Writers, Seventeen, Better Homes and Gardens, Parenting, Parents, Good Housekeeping, HOME, the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, and more - AND, she has helped countless writers and clients develop their brand and achieve exposure locally, nationally and globally.

The Author Brand teaches writers how to “brand” themselves so they will be seen as an author/writer, and what they can do on social media to further that image. We’ll also look at how to strategically place your writing in the best outlets for your brand and purpose, how to position yourself as a credible author/writer, and how to set yourself up so you will attract publishers and agents when you’re ready.

In this course, we'll examine the art of branding, how to know your writer style and voice, and how to create a plan for your writing that you will be eager to enact.

During the seminar participants will do some free-writing to get clear on the type of branding that is best for them!

ABOUT LYNNE GOLODNER:

You know that person you were when you were little, before the pressures and stresses of having to earn a living or support a family? Back when you engaged in activities simply because they were fun and you were driven to do them? For Lynne Golodner, that person loved writing. In the early 1980s, she carried around a corduroy-covered journal, writing stories, poems, and skits. When a neighbor’s son tragically died in middle school, Lynne created a neighborhood newsletter to give his parents as a way to express sympathy for their loss. Writing was her way of figuring out the world, of capturing momentary beauty and stunning silence.

Lynne has written about home, architecture, design and real estate, food, faith and family, and she is the author of eight books. A nationally-celebrated journalist, Lynne has lived in New York, Washington, D.C., and Detroit, before pivoting her career to focus on marketing. Her writing has appeared in magazines and newspapers across America including Saveur, Better Homes and Gardens, Midwest Living, the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit News, Parenting, Parents, AARP: The Magazine, Seventeen, Good Housekeeping, HOME, Teacher Magazine, Hockey Digest, Poets & Writers, Tennis Magazine, Crain’s Detroit Business and so many more.

When she became a single mother of three young children in 2007, Lynne parlayed her communication skills into a new role as Founder and Chief Creative Officer at Your People – a marketing and public relations company with a focus on purpose and story that revolutionizes how organizations build brand awareness and grow their bottom line.

With a specialty working with Waldorf/Steiner schools, she helps schools and universities, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs market with meaning through strategic storytelling, mutually beneficial relationships and higher purpose. She has spent more than 20 years as an entrepreneur, college writing professor, and author, inspiring others to find their voice, identify their purpose, and live according to the unique passion found within. She believes the work you do should align with who you are at the core – and from there, grows a life of purpose.

Lynne is a 2020-2021 member of the Forbes Agency Council and repeatedly receives awards for her innovative marketing and public relations leadership. In 2019, she was recognized by MichBusiness as a Marketing & PR Prophet, and in 2018 Crain’s Detroit Business named Lynne a Notable Woman in Marketing.

Her most recent venture is the Make Meaning Movement, including the Make Meaning Podcast, which she launched in 2018. Lynne writes about marketing with meaning at Forbes.com. She also teaches writing and marketing/PR at University of Detroit Mercy.

Lynne has taught a variety of classes throughout North America, including her signature courses What’s Your Story, 21-Day Blogging Challenge, Sports Writing, Food Writing, The Art of the Essay, and Find Your Voice. Her college courses have included composition, literature and poetry, professional writing, creative writing, journalism, business writing and academic writing, among others.

A Fulbright Specialist, Lynne graduated from University of Michigan (BA, Communications/English) and Goddard College (MFA, Writing). She is the mother of four teenagers and lives in Huntington Woods, Michigan.
