Led by Barbara Schoichet, author of the memoir Don’t Think Twice: Adventure and Healing at 100 Miles Per Hour (Putnam/Penguin Random House). She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College and a Ph.D in Creative Writing from Lancaster University in England.

Whether you've enjoyed or survived an unconventional upbringing or you've lived a relatively normal life, there’s bound to be something that stands out.

This class will teach you how to uncover that slice of your life and turn it into a short essay or weave it into a full-length book about how you've become the person you are.

You can choose to write a short piece about anything from meeting a movie star to walking away from a plane crash. Or you could write a full-length book about anything from overcoming abuse to growing up with a traveling circus. Memoir writing is story telling, except it's not fiction, it's true!

This class is a workshop and each student will get to present a piece (generally no more than 10 pages) at least twice. The work will be critiqued by Barbara as well as fellow students ahead of class, and discussed during the zoom session.

Barbara will also provide weekly writing prompts, which she refers to as optional homework. These are intended to be generative pieces to jump start your writing and creative process. In addition to the two pieces you will submit for workshop, the generative writing exercises will help you create a body of new writing over the course of this 8-week workshop.

In this generative 8-week workshop you can expect the following in each class:

  • In-class discussion
  • Writing exercises
  • Detailed peer and teacher feedback
  • A safe, supportive space to tell your story and grow as a writer

By the end of the course you will have:

  • The tools you need to continue your writing practice
  • Completed drafts for further development, revision, and publication
  • The confidence that your story is meaningful for yourself and other readers
