Taught by Michelle Kicherer, an arts journalist, writing coach and instructor specializing in fiction and memoir. Michelle regularly interviews some of the world’s favorite writers and her work has been published in outlets throughout the United States and Canada. Michelle believes that there are no dumb questions in the classroom, only pretentious teachers.

In this class, we'll explore techniques for producing the work you want and learn applicable daily rituals for getting the work done.

Sometimes we become so focused on productivity or “doing it right” that we stifle our creativity. In this class, we’ll focus on one of the hardest parts of writing: writing. The goal is to end this course with a refreshed toolkit of prompts and ways to make a regular writing practice part of your life’s routine.

We’ll use new prompts and guided activities to inspire new creations each week. We’ll look at the work of writers we admire and ask: how’d they do that? As they say, writing is a muscle, and no matter what your experience level, you have to continually exercise that muscle and practice new tools to keep your writing nimble and moving.

Through a variety of prompts, we’ll create new work every week and practice tools for expanding existing projects and unblocking writer’s block.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Learn new tools for getting the writing juices flowing and getting words on the page.
  • Better understand the meaning behind your words.
  • Practice applying new tools to works in progress.
  • Develop or strengthen your regular writing practice.
  • Have community with other writers of all levels in a safe writing space!

We will then apply these tools to your work through activities like:

  • Creating a “brain dump”
  • Drafting a story outline
  • Writing character sketches
  • Pinpointing and refining a story’s inciting incidents and moments of consequence
  • Look at ways to add writing a regular writing and editing practices to your calendar

Each week you’ll receive optional homework for how to keep creating in the days between our meetings. This class is meant to be fun, encouraging and generative. This class is designed for writers of all levels. Come write with us!

    TESTIMONIALS:

"I gained confidence. I became aware of some of my strong points, the details of writing conversation, the scheme of plot and theme in developing a story, and the importance of considering less rather than more when editing one’s own work. These were all elements of writing that Michelle taught. I know my skill in writing has improved… I was amazed that so much could be covered in two hours of Zoom!” - Beverley C. Writing Student

"Michelle, thanks again and again. It’s been delightful to work with you and receive such helpful suggestions, skilled editing, and on-going encouragement. You’ve fed my writing in more ways than you could ever know, or imagine.“ - Geri O. Writing Student

"Michelle was so easy to work with. She was able to provide new ideas, to focus my thinking, and to generate a structure and a way forward that I couldn’t see because I was too close to the material.” - Peter Novak
