Part book club, part generative writing workshop, in this three-month class, we’ll learn to read as a writer reads—not just for enjoyment or for information—but to sculpt words into works of art that grab a reader’s attention and speak to their hearts.
Each month participants will read an assigned novel, essay collection, or other short work, and then meet on Zoom to discuss what we've read as a group. We’ll discuss techniques used in the readings to engage in generative exercises. The goal will be to use the readings as inspiration to create new work across genres. Writers looking to start new projects or find new avenues for developing current projects will benefit from these exercises. Students will also have the opportunity to submit one work-in-progress to the instructor for constructive feedback at the end of the course.
The assigned readings will be books that blend genres and break rules in an attempt to understand how a writer can create a personal writing practice that is true to their own voice and experience.
The course will focus on creative writing as a discipline that requires the practice of many skills, and we’ll look at how authors practice these skills—including the careful construction of language to make meaning, revising with a reader in mind, and finding new ways to activate the imagination.
