Taught by Janée J. Baugher, author of The Ekphrastic Writer: Creating Art-Influenced Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction (McFarland, 2020), The Body’s Physics (Tebot Bach, 2013), and Coördinates of Yes (Ahadada Books, 2010). Over the last 25 years her writing has been published widely, including in The Writer’s Chronicle, Tin House, Hippocampus Magazine, and Denver Quarterly. Baugher, a former poetry editor of Willow Springs and Switched-on Gutenberg, is a longtime assistant editor at Boulevard.

Get to know Janée in our Meet the Teaching Artist series.

This single class will aim to demystify the question, “What do poetry editors really want?”

The instructor will share her insight, cynicism, examples of poems gone wrong, and suggestions for publishing goals for students, all informed by her work as an editor who has read thousands of poetry submissions for literary journals.

We’ll also review successful poems and discuss possible reasons for their publishable qualities.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Seeing submissions from editors’ perspectives.
  • Save time and effort by knowing tricks of the trade.
  • Increase the likelihood of acceptances by following these steps.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS:

This class will be a mixture of lecture, discussion, writing exercises, and Q&A. Students are encouraged to take notes and ask questions pertaining to the writer/editor relationship, as well as specific questions related to their own aesthetics and publishing goals. Students are welcome to bring excerpts of their poems to class in order to evaluate their publishable qualities (for current issues in the best literary journals).

TESTIMONIALS:

I am grateful for the balance of poetic knowledge and instinct with her scientific sensibilities.” -J.A., former student

Her class has a simple elegance to it….It offers something to everyone on the spectrum, whether you’re just a bit curious or a poet in the making.” -L.H., former student
