Fiction Writing for Teens:
For students in grades 8 -12
Will Return Summer 2021
This four-day workshop is for teens (grades 8 through 12) who are passionate about writing fiction, including short stories and novels in all genres. Students will work on their stories in Google Docs so that the instructor and their peers may read and provide feedback (instructions on using Docs will be provided).
Every Saturday, the group will meet via Zoom for a writing craft chat, followed by a discussion of each writer’s work-in-progress. Writers will have two responsibilities throughout this course:
- Working on their stories throughout the weekend. The Saturday Zoom meetings are reserved for discussion and feedback, not writing time.
- Providing their peers with feedback on their stories. Learning how to give and receive constructive criticism is essential in any creative writer’s growth. Students will be responsible for keeping up with reading their peers’ stories during the week to prepare for the discussion on Saturday. The instructor will provide guidelines and tips on giving positive constructive feedback. Depending on the size of the group, the instructor may assign peer reading so that students aren’t overwhelmed with stories to read.
The goal of this course is to help teen writers take their fiction to the next level by participating in a critique group with a published author. The instructor will lead discussions about what it takes to have a career as an author or writer, choosing a publishing path, and more.
Please note: If a writer already has a novel in progress, they are welcome to continue working on it during this course. However, feedback will only be provided on the pages written during the time period of this course. Writers who have already written over 20 pages prior to the start of the course are encouraged to write a brief summary to provide the instructor and their peers with context for the new pages they will be critiquing.

-Thanks to this course and her guidance, I have been able to start my book. I am indebted to Ms. Schusterman.
-This is the first course to walk me through all the ins and outs of actually getting a book published, aka I felt like I was treated like an actual writer and not a two year old child. I appreciate this.
-How may I become pen pals with Michelle Schusterman? I need help finding a publishing agent: I wanna go the whole nine yards. Thanks :)!
