Led by David Byron Queen, whose work has appeared in VICE, Split Lip Magazine, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Hobart, McSweeney's, and elsewhere. David has an MFA from the University of Montana, where he was a Truman Capote Fellow. He lives in New York and runs the indie publishing company word west.

Since their debut with 1984’s Blood Simple, brothers Joel and Ethan Coen have carved out their own unique cinematic world—a hybrid of screwball comedy, neo-noir, gothic Americana, all with an ear for the United States’ quirkiest regional dialects and most disparate landscapes.

As writers themselves, the Coens have cited inspiration in authors like Raymond Chandler, Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, and Cormac McCarthy to name a few.

In this 6-week film + fiction workshop, we’ll explore a selection of Coen classics: Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, A Serious Man, and students will each write and workshop their own Coen-esque stories.

Expect readings, movie nights, special guests, and much more dont’cha know.

In this generative 6-week workshop, you will:

  • Take away written feedback on your stories.
  • Have a stronger understanding of your unique voice.
  • Develop and practice writing techniques pulled from the Coen Brothers oeuvre
  • Have stronger confidence in your writing and analyzing the writing of your peers.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Stronger sense of storytelling.
  • Stronger sense of reading and analyzing how stories and film work.
  • Stronger sense of giving helpful feedback to peers/writers.
  • And a clearer sense of the type of fiction you want to write.

FILM LIST:

  • Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, A Serious Man

SCHEDULING NOTE:

During Halloween weekend this class will meet at 2PM CST on Saturday, October 30th instead of Sunday, October 31st.
