Led by Elise M. Chatelain, PhD and Sara Tatyana Bernstein, PhD, co-founders of Dismantle Magazine. They originally created Dismantle to be an accessible forum for critical fashion, pop culture, and cultural studies.

You are an expert in your field. Have you ever wished you could share your work outside of academic or professional journals? Write for an audience beyond your peers?

Maybe you’re a full-time professor or advanced professional who wants to deepen your commitment to public writing. Or you’re an adjunct or recent graduate who’d like to keep your research alive and make money at the same time.

Writing for the public is a very different genre than writing for others in your field but we promise we can help you do it!

In addition to her work on Dismantle, Sara's writing has been published in Longreads, Vox, The Outline, BuzzFeed Reader, Catapult, Inside Higher Ed, and more. As editor for Dismantle, Elise has worked with dozens of writers to help their brilliant ideas shine in a web magazine format. Elise’s experience as an academic coach also helps her find and present a writer's best work. Between them Sara and Elise have over 30 years experience as educators, writers and editors.

    COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

    • How to find a story with public stakes in your research.
    • How to structure an article for a general audience.
    • How to craft a pitch that will get editors' attention.
    • How to find paying venues that welcome public scholars and advanced professionals.

    TAKE THIS CLASS IF:

    • You're finding the constraints of your current writing practice too limiting.
    • You want exposure to a range of new approaches to bring to your writing practice.
    • You want an expanded sense of what is possible in your work.

    TESTIMONIALS:

"I’ve worked with the Dismantle Team both as a writer and as a host for one of their workshops. Their workshop inspired graduate students and faculty to embrace the importance of their research, while also demystifying the process of reaching broader audiences. As researchers, we have an imperative to share our knowledge, and the Dismantle Team can teach you how to do that." Associate Director, UC Davis Feminist Research Institute
