Does Your Writing Travel?

During the pandemic I've used my writing to travel. I wrote a piece set in Paris specifically because I wanted to go there in my mind and I had a story to tell. Plus, I wanted to taste the food again if even in my mind.

One of the things I love most about writing is that it transports me. Even a bad first draft is transportive and filled with possibility. Done well, it has the power to transport your reader.

The best part about traveling is the food (IMO). If you travel, you have to eat. (Even if you don’t travel, you have to eat.) Many people travel to eat. And there's a reason that traveling and eating go hand in hand: Food is never just food--it’s history, it's culture. It's also love, politics, luxury, necessity, art, and science. It is inextricable from both its place of origin and wherever it’s served.

For these reasons, I'm really excited Diana Spechler is offering an online class where you can talk about combining "food" and "place" into compelling stories. Diana is the author of the New York Times Opinion series Going Off, so she is the perfect guide for this class.

Covid has thrown a wrench into both traveling and dining out, but that won't matter here. The "place" you write about can be as accessible as your hometown. You will also have the option to write from memory, write about food and travel issues that feel currently pressing, maybe even profile that chef you've always had a crush on. And you can do it all from the comfort of your home.

Take a look at the class description by clicking on the button below and think about joining us for this 4-Week journey. We can promise it will be a lot of fun and you'll be with a great group led by a great writer.

You will learn about all the different directions food and travel writing can take, from lyrical essays to serious reporting. Weekly writing prompts will let you experiment with different projects and community interaction will give you support and feedback on your work. Diana will share great published essays for instruction and inspiration.

By the end of the class, you will have drafts of four pieces of travel and food writing.

So, what are you waiting for? This class starts January 18th. Why don't you join us?
