5 Rules For Developing The Author's Mindset

New York Times bestselling Author Jerry Jenkins has five rules that make up what he calls The Author's Mindset.

Together, these five rules dispel the greatest misconceptions about published authors: namely, that they don't face the same doubt and terror of the blank page.

Rather, they get to work and have a set of processes they trust that guide them through the completion of their projects.

They know once you give yourself permission to begin, the rest can take care of itself.
I agree with Jenkins' five rules below for developing The Author's Mindset.

1. Get started (even before you're ready).

Dreamers talk about writing. Writers write.
2. Finish, no matter what.

If you never finish, failure is guaranteed.
3. Solicit constructive input from experienced people.

The people who love you will love whatever you write. But professional input can get you published.
4. Boldly submit your writing to agents or publishers...

...so you don’t have to resort to paying merely to be printed.
5. Actually learn and grow from rejections.

Publishing lore is replete with stories of success borne of failure.
If you need a boost, make 2021 the year you take yourself and your work more seriously. Developing these five habits over time will grow you into a working writer, one with the muscles needed to embark on and sustain your writing journey.
