The Myth Of Creative Inspiration

Is the muse simply maintaining a consistent schedule? I loved reading James Clear's post on The Myth of Creative Inspiration. Many of the world’s great artists follow a consistent schedule:

  • Maya Angelou would rent a local hotel room and go there to write. She arrived at 6:30 AM, wrote until 2 PM, and then went home to do some editing. She would never sleep at the hotel.

  • Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon writes five nights per week from 10 PM to 3 AM.

  • Haruki Murakami wakes up at 4 AM, writes for five hours, and then goes for a run.

What is your schedule? More than that, what is your action plan to reach your writing goals and/or dreams? Often taking and committing to the first step is the hardest step. As Clear says in his post, It's the mastering of daily habits that leads to success, not some mythical spark of creative inspiration. He recommends the following:

  • Daily Routines: The Power of the Schedule

  • Permission to Create Junk

  • The Schedule is the System
