In April 2025, immerse yourself in the art of storytelling amidst the breathtaking desert landscapes and vibrant cultural scene of Santa Fe. Our Santa Fe Writing Workshop brings together an intimate group of fiction and nonfiction writers for an intensive four-night experience of instructor-led workshops, craft seminars, one-on-one conferences, and in-depth discussions on the craft and business of writing.
Led by renowned New Yorker magazine contributor and memoirist Marin Sardy and celebrated novelist Swan Huntley, this program is designed to be intentionally small, ensuring personalized attention and a close-knit community atmosphere.
Santa Fe, known for its unique blend of rich history, artistic spirit, and literary allure, provides an ideal backdrop for creative exploration. Each workshop will accept no more than 10 participants, fostering an environment of focused learning and exchange. 2025 Workshop Faculty
Nonfiction Workshop Instructor Marin Sardy is the author of the critically lauded memoir The Edge of Every Day (Pantheon, 2019). Sardy’s work has appeared in the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Tin House, Guernica, the Missouri Review, and many other journals, as well as in two award-winning photography books. Her essays have twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and three times listed as “notable” in the Best American series. She teaches memoir and personal essay writing and is excited to meet and work with you in Santa Fe this April.
Fiction Workshop Instructor Swan Huntley’s novels include I Want You More, Getting Clean with Stevie Green, The Goddesses, and We Could Be Beautiful. She’s also the writer/illustrator of the darkly humorous The Bad Mood Book and You’re Grounded: An Anti-Self-Help Book to Calm You the F*ck Down. Swan earned an MFA at Columbia University and has received fellowships from MacDowell and Yaddo. She lives in Los Angeles, and can't wait to work with you in Santa Fe!
Lodging at La Fonda on the Plaza
La Fonda on the Plaza is an iconic, historic hotel located in the heart of Santa Fe, New Mexico. As the only 4-star hotel on the Plaza, it offers luxurious accommodations with Southwestern charm. Guests enjoy elegant rooms, an award-winning restaurant, and a rooftop bar with stunning views. The hotel’s rich history dates back to 1922, blending traditional Pueblo-style architecture with modern amenities. Its prime location provides easy access to Santa Fe's cultural attractions, art galleries, and unique shopping experiences, making it a perfect destination for both relaxation and exploration. Class Size
Each genre workshop will have no more than 10 participants, led by the genre faculty instructor. Daily craft talks are open to all participants and led by program staff or faculty.
Fiction & Nonfiction Workshops:
Ahead of our arrival in Santa Fe, fiction and nonfiction students will submit two manuscripts. One manuscript of up to 5,000 words will be critiqued in the group workshop and include letters of critique from your peers and instructor; your second manuscript of up to 5,000 words will be discussed in a one-on-one conference with your instructor in Santa Fe. All writers can submit up to 10,000 words in total between their two manuscript submissions.

If you are able, we encourage you to attend our afternoon activities and group dinners (activities are included in the cost of the workshop, but everyone will be responsible for covering their own dinner and drinks). We will meet in the lobby of the La Fonda for the start of each activity.

On Thursday, we will explore the vibrant history of Santa Fe on a walking tour led by a seasoned local guide. Imagine strolling through narrow, adobe-lined streets where every corner has a story. We’ll uncover the layers of Native American, Spanish, and Anglo influences that make this city so unique. Our guide will share insider tidbits about landmarks like centuries-old churches, historic homes, and the bustling Plaza that’s been the city’s heartbeat for over 400 years. This isn’t just a walk—it’s a deep dive into the colorful tapestry of Santa Fe’s past.
Friday: Chocolate-Making Class at Kakawa Chocolate House
On Friday, be amazed and captivated by the long history of chocolate through the masterful storytelling of Kakawa's owner, Bonnie, who will take your taste buds on a sensory chocolate journey. Learn about the ancient roots of chocolate, unusual facts and taste from the seed to the chocolate we know and love today, and everything in between. Enjoy several of our world-famous drinking chocolate elixirs and eating chocolates and even get a peek ‘behind the curtain’ to see us making our artisan chocolates by hand. Each guest receives a custom curated gift box at completion.
Saturday: Reading & Happy Hour Followed by Farewell Dinner
Celebrate the culmination of your Santa Fe writing workshop with an evening of readings and revelry. Share your work and listen to your peers' pieces during our reading session, followed by a lively happy hour. Conclude the night with a memorable farewell dinner, savoring delectable cuisine while reflecting on the week’s experiences and newfound friendships.

Tuition
Tuition is $2,995 for your own room, or $2,295 to share a room with two double beds. Tuition includes the following:
- Lodging at La Fonda on the Plaza for 5 days, 4 nights
- Welcome dinner and drinks on the first night.
- 3-day writing workshops in small groups of no more than 10 writers, let by program faculty.
- Critical feedback on writing submissions.
- Daily craft of writing and/or business of writing seminars.
- One-on-one conference with faculty.
- A walking tour of historic Santa Fe led by a local expert.
- A group chocolate making class with Kakawa Chocolate House.
- Hors d'oeuvres at the final reading.
- Please note: Aside from the opening dinner, meals are not included in the price of tuition.

Program Staff
Trip Leader Danielle Kimzey has an MFA in Painting from the University of Iowa, where she received the Mildred Lynch Pelzer Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited internationally and across the United States; she is represented by Galleri Urbane in Dallas. Recently, her work has been shown at The Painting Center in New York, The Hawn Gallery at SMU, St. Ambrose University, and the Mesquite Arts Center. She has been a resident at the Vermont Studio Center and the Nemeth Art Center in Minnesota. In 2012, she was the Artist in Residence at Knox College, where she had a solo show at the Box Gallery and painted a large mural in downtown Galesburg, IL. In 2020, her design for a 30-foot-tall Living Wall in West Palm Beach, Florida, was realized at 205 Datura Street. Currently, she runs the Art Cottage Airbnb in Dallas. Danielle was a bicycle and Segway tour guide with Fat Tire Bike Tours in Nice and Paris, France. She has also worked as an art teacher to students of all ages and stages. She was the middle and high school art teacher at Cambridge School of Dallas. She taught Drawing at The University of Iowa, public art at Knox College, and Design at Texas Christian University. Currently, she teaches Art Appreciation and Painting at Dallas College. Danielle's art or writing has appeared in McSweeney's, D Magazine, The Dallas Morning News, Faultline: Journal of Arts and Letters, Rust Belt Bindery, and Her Royal Majesty.
Trip Leader Crystal Franz worked as a bicycle tour guide with Fat Tire Bike Tours in Paris and Versailles. She holds an M.F.A. in theatre directing from Texas State University with a secondary focus in Shakespeare Studies. She studied and taught for two summers at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon. She taught directing, acting, and Intro to Fine Arts at Texas State University, as well as middle and high school drama at Headwaters School in Austin, TX. Her productions of The Triathlete by Gus Bennett, Lightning Girl by Rita Anderson, and Mother Enough? which she wrote, all won “Best of the Week” in Frontera Fringe Festival in Austin. She was selected as a national finalist in the SDC Directing Initiative and attended the KCACTF National Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., where she was invited to attend the M.F.A. Playwrights’ Workshop. Crystal strives to live creatively and seek out new experiences. You will find her outside, globetrotting, reading a book, learning to play the violin alongside her children, making dessert - something chocolate, or scooching her dog Bonzo off her yoga mat.

What is the application deadline?
Applications for our 2025 Santa Fe Workshop are now closed. Due to volume, early applications are encouraged.
What will my application include?
- Brief bio informing us of your involvement in the writing and literary community, as well as any prior or forthcoming publications (500 words max).
- Purpose statement explaining why you would like to participate in Writing Workshops Santa Fe. You can also discuss current manuscripts or writing projects that you might choose to workshop. (1000 words max.)
- Writing sample excerpt. This does not have to be published work, though that is acceptable, nor does it have to be a piece you plan to workshop. Complete works under the word count are not required; excerpts are acceptable. (writing sample should be no more than 5000 words max.)
- Early applications are encouraged.
When will I know if I've been accepted to the workshop?
We cap our workshop participation at 10 writers in each genre cohort for the week. Our goal is to provide an intimate, rigorous workshop environment so that participants can come to Santa Fe and find meaningful connections and excellent feedback on their work. Due to the volume of applications and competitive acceptance, writers are encouraged to apply early. We employ a reading committee of professional writers and editors, and applicants will be notified after the application window closes.
How much does it cost?
Tuition is $2,995 for your own room or $2,295 to share a room with two double beds. If your application is accepted, full tuition is due within 14 days. Upon acceptance, you will have the option to pay your tuition in full or opt for a payment plan by selecting Affirm at checkout.
What is your refund policy for the workshop in Santa Fe?
Given the intimate nature of our destination workshops and our own, non-refundable deposit schedule as organizers, our refund policy is as follows:
90+ days before your trip, tuition payment minus a $900 deposit is fully refundable.
60+ days before your trip: 50% of your tuition is refundable.
30+ days before your: 25% of your tuition is refundable.
Less than 30 days before your trip: no refunds can be offered.
By making your tuition payment in full, you agree to these terms.
What does tuition include?
Lodging at La Fonda on the Plaza for 5 days, 4 nightsWelcome dinner and drinks on the first night.
3-day writing workshops in small groups of no more than 10 writers, let by program faculty.
Critical feedback on writing submissions.
Daily craft of writing and/or business of writing seminars.
One-on-one conference with faculty.
A walking tour of historic Santa Fe led by a local expert.

Please note: Aside from the opening dinner, meals are not included in the price of tuition.
Are Payment Plans Available?
Yes. Accepted writers will have the option to pay their tuition in full or opt for a payment plan divided into equal monthly payments by selecting Affirm (for U.S. & Canadian residents) at checkout.
Are Scholarships Available?
Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to offer scholarships for this workshop. However, we do have payment plans available at checkout.

La Fonda on the Plaza is an iconic, historic hotel located in the heart of Santa Fe, New Mexico. As the only 4-star hotel on the Plaza, it offers luxurious accommodations with Southwestern charm. It is the responsibility of attendees of Writing Workshops Santa Fe to have the appropriate documentation required and to meet any COVID vaccination requirements implemented by the state of Louisiana. If the state of Louisiana forbids entry to their state for the dates of Wednesday, April 9 - Sunday, April 13, Writing Workshops will offer a full refund for program fees. Writing Workshops will not reimburse for any airline tickets or additional trip-related expenses incurred. If the Santa Fe writing workshop takes place on the dates planned, no program fees will be reimbursed, regardless of attendance.
