Taught by Elizabeth Teets, an Oregon-born writer, comedian, screenwriter, and fashionista. She is the author of I Blame Television: Essays on the Pop Culture that Raised, Ruined, and Enraptured Me (2026), and her work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Repeller, Catapult, Reductress, and more. Elizabeth lives in Los Angeles, where she is waiting for her group chat to respond, and is the editor of the film anthology Isn't She Great: Writers on Women Led Comedies from 9 to 5 to Booksmart.

Who is this class for?

This introductory online writing workshop is for anyone who loves fashion but feels like an outsider to the fashion world — and to the writing world. If you have a personal style you want to see on the page, or you remember your life more vividly through what you wore than what you did, this creative writing course is for you. Anyone who wears clothes (at least sometimes) is welcome.

What to expect:

Do you love fashion but feel like it's a world out of reach? This four-week online writing class isn't about the work of industry professionals. It's about writing the world of fashion and style through a personal lens — the hunt of a good thrift find, the spectacle of a Haute Couture show, the sweater you can't throw away. Elizabeth Teets blends fashion, pop culture, and media into essays and narratives that create a full sensory experience for the reader, and she'll show you how to do the same.

Each week begins with generative prompts and craft discussion, then moves into building and shaping your own piece. You'll read widely across fashion writing — critics, memoirists, and stylists of the sentence — and break down how these writers convey not just clothes but a whole life and a whole personality on the page. By week three you'll be revising in workshop with Elizabeth and your peers, learning the revision strategies that turn a promising draft into finished work.

Class meetings are held over video chat using Zoom, accessed from our private class page. Come ready for live interaction each week, plenty of writing and reading, and a room full of people who want to talk about clothes as seriously as they talk about sentences.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will:

• Generate short exercises on texture, clothing, and personal style
• Draft one polished piece of stylish writing, approximately 2,000 words
• Revise that piece with feedback from Elizabeth and peers in workshop
• Identify outlets, publications, or larger projects the finished piece could fit into

Readings

Readings may include excerpts from the work of Suzy Menkes, Michelle Tea, and Oscar Wilde, among others. Over four weeks we'll break down how these writers write about not only clothes but life — and how they convey personal style on the page.

COURSE OUTLINE

Week 1: My Style on the Page. Generative prompts on texture, clothing, and sensory detail. Students submit short exercises exploring clothes and style.

Week 2: Why This Look? Students begin crafting a narrative piece with fashion as its central theme.

Week 3: Even Divas Need to Edit. Students revise their submitted work with Elizabeth and peers in workshop.

Week 4: Time to Be Seen. Students focus on the goals for their piece and what outlets or larger projects it fits into, along with additional edits building on the previous week.
