Instructor Sage Tyrtle is a Moth GrandSLAM winner, and their work is available in New Delta Review, The Offing, Lunch Ticket, and Apex. She is the author of the novella The King of Elkport. Her words have been featured on NPR, CBC, and PBS and have been taught in schools. She's been nominated for Pushcart and Best American Short Stories. Sage has taught storytelling and writing workshops since 2010, including workshops at York University and Toronto Storytelling Festival, in India, Chicago, and Nova Scotia.

Everyone has a true story, but not every story is the right one to tell—at least, not yet. Maybe you have too many ideas and don’t know which one to choose. Maybe you feel like your life isn’t interesting enough. Or maybe you’re drawn to certain memories but aren’t sure if they’ll resonate with an audience.

This workshop is designed to help you find the right story—the one with emotional weight, strong narrative potential, and personal significance. Through a mix of discussion, exercises, and analysis of great personal storytelling, we’ll explore what makes certain stories compelling and how to identify the moments that matter. You’ll uncover the hidden themes in your experiences, challenge assumptions about what makes a story "worthy," and learn to trust your instincts as a storyteller.

By the end of this session, you’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of the personal stories only you can tell and a roadmap for turning them into something powerful. Whether you’re writing memoir, essays, or personal fiction, this workshop will give you the tools to shape your own true story.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Discover the Right Story to Tell – You’ll identify personal stories with the strongest emotional and narrative potential, ensuring your writing resonates with both you and your audience.
  • Understand What Makes a Story Compelling – You’ll learn how to recognize the key elements that transform a personal experience into an engaging, well-crafted narrative.
  • Uncover Hidden Themes in Your Life – Through guided exercises, you’ll reveal deeper connections in your experiences, finding meaning in stories you may have overlooked.
  • Develop a Solid Story Framework – By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a clear outline, first draft, or detailed notes for a personal essay, memoir excerpt, or personal fiction piece.
  • Gain Confidence in Your Storytelling Choices – You’ll leave with the tools to assess which personal stories work best for your writing and the confidence to shape them into powerful narratives.

COURSE TEASER:

This is a 2 hour course. We'll be looking at the ingredients that must be included for the story to work. Students will have an opportunity to get feedback on possible stories.
