Who is this class for?

This flash fiction writing workshop is perfect for writers looking for support and inspiration to get words on the page. Whether you're new to the short form or an experienced writer looking for a creative boost, this online writing class is open to all levels.

What to expect:

Celebrate National Flash Fiction Month by spending three hours putting pen to paper in this live online writing workshop. Together, you'll write first drafts of multiple flash fiction pieces — short stories that are 1,000 words or less. Prompts will come from a variety of sources, including the work of contemporary flash fiction masters such as Kathy Fish and Weike Wang.

This is a generative, encouragement-focused workshop. Students will be invited to read their work during the session, and instructor Lauren Davis will provide feedback exclusively on what is strong in each piece that is shared. The emphasis is on forward momentum and creative confidence rather than critique.

A recording of the full Zoom session will be provided to all enrolled students, so you won't miss a thing even if you can't attend live. Come ready to write — and leave with the beginnings of a flash fiction collection.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will generate at least six first drafts of flash fiction stories. Students who share their work during the workshop will receive verbal feedback from the instructor highlighting the strengths of each piece.

Readings

Students will receive a handout before the workshop begins. Prompts during the session will draw on the work of contemporary flash fiction writers including Kathy Fish and Weike Wang.
