Instructor Sarah Herrington is a writer and teacher whose work has appeared in the New York Times (Modern Love, Anxiety, Solver Stories, and OpEd columns), the LA Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Tin House, Slice, Nylon, Los Angeles Review of Books, Interview, Poets & Writers, O, The Oprah Magazine, and other publications. She is the author of four books on yoga and spirituality. She holds an MFA from New York University, where she was a Goldwater Fellow, an MFA from Lesley University, and teaches writing at Fordham. In addition to teaching writing, she has taught yoga and meditation for fifteen years and brings this embodied lens to her workshops.

Who is this class for?

This online writing workshop is for writers of all levels and all genres who want to tap into embodied, lived experience and translate it into stories, essays, poems, and memoir. It's for anyone carrying a haunting, a hunch, a memory that won't let go, a story of illness or wellness, or any story that lives within the skin. You'll leave with exercises for hearing the stories your body holds and tools for generating new work from them.

What to expect:

This is a generative creative writing workshop designed to help you hear and source the words that live in your body. We'll begin with meditation and breathwork to settle into ourselves and our inner narratives, then move through three rounds of writing exercises that draw the words only you can write — straight from the gut.

Sarah's approach pulls from both generative creative writing tools and mindfulness, meditation, and yogic perspectives, helping us hear the body's stories and translate them into language. Drawing on fifteen years of teaching both writing and meditation, she leads an embodied, fruitful online writing class built around new words on the page.

Along the way you'll read short "body words" excerpts from other writers, and there will be time for optional sharing and Q&A. The goal is to leave not just with new pages, but with a repeatable practice for hearing your inner landscape and translating sensation, memory, and experience into language.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will generate a list of stories sourced from the gut and produce up to five pages of new writing to develop further. Please note this is a generative workshop focused on producing new work; it does not include individual instructor feedback on submitted pages.

Readings may include excerpts from Melissa Febos, Body Work; Roxane Gay, Hunger; Stephanie Danler, Stray; and Kiese Laymon, Heavy, along with other selected work.
