Sometimes the next step isn't another writing workshop. It's someone in your corner: someone who knows your project, remembers what you said you'd do last time, and asks the question you've been avoiding.

That's what this online writing coaching package is. Four 50-minute Zoom sessions, one-on-one with author and longtime writing coach Ben Tanzer, built entirely around where you are right now. Maybe you haven't written in two years and don't know how to begin again. Maybe you have sixty thousand words and no idea whether they add up to a book. Maybe the draft is done, and you need a plan for what comes after it.

You and Ben shape the package together in your first session. Most writers use their four sessions for some combination of:

  • Getting unstuck and understanding why you got stuck in the first place
  • Building a writing practice that survives a real week
  • Developing the work itself: structure, character, momentum, and what's missing
  • Planning what comes after the draft: revision, submission, pitching, and how to get your work in front of readers

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Four 50-minute one-on-one sessions on Zoom
  • Written notes after every session capturing what you discussed and what you committed to
  • Assignments between sessions, built around your project
  • Written feedback on up to 25 pages of your work across the package
  • A written plan for your next 90 days, including which Writing Workshops class, if any, makes sense as your next step

ABOUT BEN

Ben Tanzer is a writer, coach, teacher, and creative strategist who has spent the last 30 years helping authors, publishers, nonprofits, and career changers tell their stories. His books include the short story collection Upstate, the science fiction novel Orphans, the essay collections Lost in Space and Be Cool, and the novel The Missing (7.13 Books, 2024), a finalist for the Chicago Writers Association Book of the Year. His most recent book, After Hours: Scorsese, Grief and the Grammar of Cinema, was published by Ig Publishing in 2025, and his story collection Human Noise is forthcoming from Thirty West Publishing House in 2027. His writing has appeared in Hemispheres, Punk Planet, and Men's Health, and he co-scripted a child abuse prevention public service campaign for the Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida that won a Suncoast Emmy. Through his practice, HEFT Creative Strategies, he coaches writers and small business owners on story development and personal narrative. He teaches at Lake Forest College and Roosevelt University and hosts the long-running podcast This Podcast Will Change Your Life. A trained social worker, Ben coaches the way he teaches his seminar on hope and the writing process: by exploring habits and practices that will help his clients pursue their goals, focus on becoming more self-aware, and build effective pathways for increased productivity.

HOW IT WORKS

As soon as you enroll, you'll receive a confirmation email with Ben copied, so the two of you can start scheduling right away. Your first session takes place within 30 days of enrollment, and all four sessions are completed within 10 weeks of your first session, at times that work for you both.

Need to move a session? Give at least 24 hours' notice and it's no problem; a session missed without notice counts as one of your four. Send pages for feedback at least five days before the session where you'd like to discuss them. Because the free consultation lets you make sure coaching is the right fit first, tuition is fully refundable until your first session and non-refundable after it.

TESTIMONIALS:

"Ben, thank you so very much for this truly terrific workshop! So many valuable insights. And the fact that you seek to write 30 minutes a day, and you don't look for that 'precious' place to write is the best piece of news about writing I have heard in years! What a relief for me to hear that! It gave me a path to start with, right then and there. In regard to the amount of time we had, I, for one, thought the two-hour schedule was just right."

"Ben Tanzer did a great job of compressing meaningful theory plus practice and interaction into a short time frame. He created an opportunity for each person to have a valuable experience. You should take his Introducing Hope into Our Writing Process seminar if you can."

"Ben Tanzer's Introducing Hope into Our Writing Process seminar offers a peek behind the curtain at the real assumptions, motivational issues, and habits that get in the way of productive writing. It offers practical experiments and ways to rethink what we are doing so that we can find new pathways to our goals, or new goals."

"The workshop with Ben Tanzer was a fantastic combination of science, personal experience, and psychology that gave me clear, applicable tools to improve my writing life. Ben is a warm, empathetic, and engaging instructor, and he created a safe, fun, and enlightening space for us to learn and grow as writers—and as people."

"I wasn’t sure how the concept of 'hope' might relate to the writing process. All of these workshops have opened my eyes to different views of writing, from meeting the x-number-of-words-per-day challenge to the more human yet complex task of organizing thoughts into an inspiring product. Introducing the Power of Hope to Our Writing Process seminar with Ben Tanzer was no different."

PAYMENT OPTIONS:

WHAT COACHING IS (AND ISN'T)

Coaching can't guarantee a finished book or a publishing deal. What it can give you is a clear next step, and someone who notices whether you took it.
