Writing Workshops Maine 2026

Writing Workshops Maine, with New York Times best-selling novelist Carol Goodman, award-winning memoirist Mira Ptacin, and New Yorker fiction contributor Justin Taylor, brings together fiction and nonfiction writers for an intensive week of workshops, craft seminars, one-on-one conferences, and in-depth discussions on the craft and business of writing. Our program is intentionally small and will take place in the heart of literary Portland, Maine.

Each fiction and nonfiction workshop will be capped at 10 participants. Writers will submit two completed pieces of writing: one to be workshopped with your cohort and instructor, and another for a one-on-one session with your workshop leader. Daily craft talks, led by faculty and staff, are open to all participants.

Our workshops are designed for writers seeking to refine their voice, deepen their understanding of craft, and chart a path to publication. We take your writing seriously and place the highest value on teaching the craft in a way that helps you produce powerful, lasting work with the potential to reach readers well beyond the workshop.

Since 2016, our mission has been to bring your writing out of the wilderness and into community. Next June, we gather in Portland—a coastal city with a rich literary history, working harbor, and thriving arts scene—to write, reflect, and connect. We believe there's no better place to do this work. Scroll down for more details!

Testimonials For Our Retreats

"The actual writing workshop did more for me in four days than my MFA did in two years. Elissa Bassist is amazing. I would attend another course with her in pretty much any city. She was the reason I registered for the Dublin workshop in the first place and I have absolutely no regrets. I would absolutely recommend it for someone looking for inspiration and to bring life back to their work. Elissa made me see my work in a new light that completely transformed my own understanding of my writing. If you're looking for both a wonderful trip and an opportunity to refocus creatively, this is definitely the workshop for you! The feedback from the other participants was a lot more than I was expecting, which was a positive! I felt a lot more inspired than I did throughout most of my graduate school work." -Rachel G.

The organization and communication; the workshops, craft talks and one-on-one; the hikes, tours, and meals--all exceeded my expectations. I've taken many workshops, including an MFA program. My instructor, Amber Sparks, was great. I am doing a deep revision based on her feedback now. And the add on was a great way to see more of Ireland. The Dunloe Hotel was fabulous." -Loran M.

I will never forget what I gained during that short week, and will keep in touch with so many of the people I met. Thank you for an incredible experience!" -Anne H.

"I arrived in Dublin for the Writing Workshop a little uncertain about how it was going to work. It was my first time in a nonfiction workshop, and I only knew one other person. The experience exceeded my expectations: the meticulous planning and organization, the participants, and particularly, the instructors. Diana Spechler (my nonfiction workshop instructor) was a joy: straight-forward, knowledgeable, supportive and accessible. I left with a solid sense of how to approach my nonfiction work, but more importantly, I greatly appreciated Diana's support of my work in general. I would recommend the Writing Workshop in Dublin to anyone who wants to combine a week of exploration, history, new friends, and terrific instruction ." -Joanna S.

As organizers, Blake and Mike cover all the bases so attendees can totally relax in the environment and focus on writing and group connections. The overall experience, the inclusion of food and housing, the community that was built, the work we did -- thumbs up on everything!" -Catherine V.

"Best experience I've had as a writer. I have done writing workshops before, but nothing like this one. I received genuinely transformative feedback, knowledge, and social support around my writing and novel. I will always be grateful for all I gained, learned, and experienced in this workshop. I can wholeheartedly say that the amateur writer who came into this workshop is now a tremendously evolved amateur writer with a new lens on transferring thought into text. I learned so much about my own craft, and how to tailor the style, and plot points to better suit the story I want to tell. The adventures, authors, experiences, feedback, people, places and workshops were gratifyingly high quality. It felt safe being an amateur. I received transformative feedback on my current WIP which has greatly shifted the ways I write." -Enrique E.
