Who is this class for?

This online writing class is for writers interested in freelance writing, whether that means articles and essays for magazines and websites or copy for businesses and social media. All levels are welcome. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of where to find freelance writing gigs, how to pitch articles to editors, and how to handle the business side — taxes, contracts, negotiations, and more.

What to expect:

Do you want to travel the world for free, review kitchen appliances, investigate an underground culture, highlight amazing individuals making an impact, analyze your favorite TV show, inform people about current events, or write copy about makeup that has consumers pressing the buy button? You might want to be a freelance writer.

Award-winning journalist Alex Temblador has been a full-time freelance writer for 11 years, and she'd like to share the secrets of the industry with you. In this 2.5-hour online writing seminar, you'll learn about the range of freelance writing gigs — from article and essay writing to commerce reviews, ghostwriting, and copywriting — so you can better understand which one might be the best fit for your skills and interests. Alex will explain where to find freelance writing gigs, strategies for applying to writing jobs, and the business side of things like contracts, taxes, negotiating payments, and more.

She'll even show you how to write an article or essay pitch that you can send to an editor at your favorite magazine or newspaper. Alex's approach in this Zoom writing class is built on actionable tips and strategies drawn from more than a decade of full-time freelancing, so you can step into the industry and start earning supplemental or full-time income right away. After taking this freelance writing seminar, you'll leave with all the tools to prove that whoever said you can't make money with writing was wrong.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will produce one article or essay pitch they can send to an editor right away. Alex will walk through the anatomy of a strong pitch, and students will have the chance to ask questions and get answers live throughout the seminar.
