Who is this class for?

This online writing class is open to writers of all levels and all genres who want to write honestly about their mothers and the patterns handed down through generations. We address the craft of writing rather than the basic mechanics of sentences and paragraphs.

What to expect:

Writing Our Mother Wound is a 6-week, multi-genre writing workshop that explores the deep complexities of our relationships with our mothers, in the hope of illuminating and untangling ourselves from what is known as the Mother Wound. Bethany Webster, author of Discovering the Inner Mother: A Guide to Healing the Mother Wound and Claiming Your Personal Power, describes it as "the pain rooted in our relationship with our mothers," a pain passed from generation to generation in patriarchal cultures. Left unresolved, it carries forward the beliefs and choices our mothers and grandmothers could not heal.

Kate developed this class after years of teaching her Writing Our Family workshop, where this subject came up more than any other. Look at the most popular memoirs of the last few years and you’ll see writers around the world finally ready to address, and hopefully heal, this generational wound. Working across epistolary writing, fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and memoir, you’ll come at the subject from angles you may never have tried, and craft work that transmutes dysfunction into art.

The class meets live on Zoom each Thursday evening for craft discussion and workshop. Between sessions, Wet Ink is our online classroom, where you’ll find craft materials, lectures, readings, and prompts, post your pages, and give and receive writing feedback with your peers and Kate. Class size is limited to 8 writers, so every piece gets real attention.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will write a short piece (1,000 words or fewer) each week to be workshopped, finishing with five pieces of writing across genres. Each can stand alone for publication or be expanded later into a longer story or poetry collection, novel, or memoir. Students receive detailed feedback from Kate and their peers in Wet Ink, with follow-up conversation in the live Zoom sessions.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Five multi-genre pieces: Five distinct pieces of 1,000 words or fewer across fiction, poetry, memoir, epistolary writing, and nonfiction, ready to stand alone for publication or grow into longer work.
  • New perspectives on generational patterns: Through craft techniques and peer discussion, you’ll examine the Mother Wound from angles you haven’t considered, and see more clearly the beliefs and patterns passed down through generations.
  • Tools to turn personal pain into art: Specific craft techniques for transforming family dysfunction into compelling work readers recognize as their own.
  • Range across genres: Confidence experimenting with forms you might not usually try, and the chance to discover new strengths in epistolary writing, poetry, fiction, and memoir.
  • Feedback and community: Weekly workshop feedback from Kate Hill Cantrill and a small cohort of fellow writers, in a supportive space for writing about difficult family dynamics.

TESTIMONIALS:

"I am writing review as recipient of a gift from my husband to participate in this course. What a lovely course I experienced with Kate Hill Cantrill. I was a newbie to a formal writing course and also busy with regular life in the meantime. Kate was gracious, passionate, and kind. She was supportive and inspiring in her guidance and feedback. I appreciated the well prepared content and writing prompts, and loved the idea that we could be honest and open about the difficult topics we approached in writing about family. I felt Kate was also particularly patient and encouraging to newcomers to the process. I would recommend her course highly, and also hope to take a future course with her when I have the time."
— Richard J.

"I appreciated the ability to experiment with writing genres I would not have ordinarily have had the courage (& maybe even interest) to play around with, e.g., poetry, but surprisingly I really enjoyed writing a freeform piece. The class was life-changing for me because it provided an environment to explore how some of my childhood experiences affected me in a creative way; I am strongly considering sharing these with others."
— Sonya C.

"I would recommend Kate's class very highly. The class FAR exceeded my expectations! Kate is a fabulous teacher. She provided excellent input and a reading list of suggested authors that has been inspirational. Kate's feedback was so helpful for my personal growth as was her reading list, positive attitude, and her knowledge about writing was exceptional."
— Ellen G.

"Kate Hill Cantrill's class Writing Our Family was excellent! The group of students worked well together, Kate's comments were precise and helpful and I learned a lot. I would do it again!"
— V.S.
