Writing Workshops Santa Fe

In April 2027, spend four nights writing in the high desert. Writing Workshops Santa Fe brings together an intimate group of writers for instructor-led workshops, craft seminars, one-on-one conferences, and long conversations about the craft and the business of writing.

Virginia Reeves, whose novel Work Like Any Other was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, leads The Master Class & Generative Seminar, open to writers in every genre. Samantha Mann, whose essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, and Vogue, leads the Nonfiction Workshop. Rubén Degollado, author of the PEN/Faulkner-longlisted The Family Izquierdo, leads the Fiction Workshop.

Writers have been coming to Santa Fe for more than a century, and a striking number of them stayed. Alice Corbin Henderson, co-editor of Poetry magazine, arrived in 1916 and built a circle around her that drew Mary Austin, Witter Bynner, Robert Frost, and Edna St. Vincent Millay. In 1925 and 1926, Willa Cather stayed at La Fonda on the Plaza, the hotel where you'll be staying, and it was there that Death Comes for the Archbishop first came to her. Cormac McCarthy spent his last three decades a few miles from the Plaza. And Santa Fe is home to the Institute of American Indian Arts, whose MFA program has become a center of contemporary Native writing: Tommy Orange and Terese Marie Mailhot were classmates there, and There There and Heart Berries followed. This is a city where literary history is still being built.

Each cohort is capped at ten writers. The number is deliberate. Ten is small enough that your instructor knows your work intimately, and small enough that the workshop will become a real community by the end of the week.

Fiction and nonfiction writers submit two manuscripts before the trip: one workshopped by your peers and instructor, one reserved for a private conference. Writers in the Master Class arrive with nothing due: you'll make the work in Santa Fe.

WritingWorkshops.com is the official education partner of Electric Literature. We treat your writing with the seriousness it deserves and teach the craft that produces work worth reading long after the week in Santa Fe ends. Our aim is to move your writing out of the solitary act of drafting and into the company of writers who take it as seriously as you do.

Applications for our April 2027 workshops are now open!

Workshop Dates:

Wednesday, April 7 – Sunday, April 11, 2027

Though our admissions process is competitive and the quality of writing high, all interested writers are encouraged to apply.

Choose Your 2027 Santa Fe Writing Track

The Master Class & Generative Seminar — Virginia Reeves

Open to writers in every genre, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, this track blends lecture, generative writing, and one-on-one instructor conferences. Virginia Reeves will lead a cohort of 10 through practical craft lectures (the uses of time, structure, and the machinery that makes a piece of writing move), and then straight into the work itself — drafting new pages on the spot, with nine other writers doing the same thing at the same hour. Writers in this cohort have the option — not the requirement — of submitting up to 10 pages in advance for Virginia to read ahead of your private one-on-one conference. Conferences are yours to shape: bring a question about a project you're already deep inside, talk through what surfaced in the seminar, or discuss the pages you submitted in advance. You'll leave Santa Fe with new pages, a set of practices you can keep using, and nine other writers who watched them take shape.

The Nonfiction Workshop — Samantha Mann

For essayists, memoirists, and writers working in any true form — a collection coming together, a memoir you're deep inside, an essay that keeps refusing to end. Samantha Mann leads a cohort of 10 in our standard retreat workshop format: three mornings of close, sustained reading, the whole table turning its attention to one writer's pages at a time. This is the kind of attention writers make the trip for. Ahead of the workshop, you'll submit two manuscripts of up to 5,000 words each. The first is discussed in workshop, with written feedback from Samantha. The second belongs to your private conference with her during the week, reserved for the questions that don't fit a group conversation. Samantha also leads one of the week's afternoon seminars, open to every writer in the program. You'll leave Santa Fe with your work read closely by people who know what they're doing, and a clear sense of what the work needs next.

The Fiction Workshop — Rubén Degollado

For novelists and story writers at any stage — a first draft you've been circling for years, a collection finding its shape, a book you're finally ready to hand to strangers. Rubén Degollado leads a cohort of 10 in our standard retreat workshop format: three mornings around the table, reading slowly, one writer's pages at a time. Fiction rewards this kind of reading more than almost anything else you can do for a manuscript, and it's the one thing a writing life at home rarely provides. Ahead of the trip, you'll submit two manuscripts of up to 5,000 words each. The first is discussed in workshop, with written feedback from Rubén. The second is reserved for your private conference with him during the week — bring the structural problem, the ending that won't land, the question you've been carrying alone. Rubén also leads one of the week's afternoon seminars, open to every writer in the program. You'll leave Santa Fe with your work read closely by people who know what they're doing, and a clear sense of what the work needs next.

Class Size

Each genre workshop will have no more than 10 participants, led by the genre faculty instructor. Daily craft seminars are open to all participants and led by our faculty.

Fiction & Nonfiction Workshops: Ahead of our arrival in Santa Fe, fiction and nonfiction students will submit two manuscripts. One manuscript of up to 5,000 words will be critiqued in the group workshop and include letters of critique from your peers and instructor; your second manuscript of up to 5,000 words will be discussed in a one-on-one conference with your instructor in Santa Fe. All writers can submit up to 10,000 words in total between their two manuscript submissions.

The Master Class & Generative Seminar: No manuscript is due before you arrive. You'll generate new work during the seminar itself. Writers in this cohort have the option — not the requirement — of submitting up to 10 pages in advance for Virginia to read ahead of your private conference.

Included Optional Activities for 2027

If you are able, we encourage you to attend our optional activities and group dinners (activities are included in the cost of the workshop, but everyone will be responsible for covering their own dinner and drinks). We will meet in the lobby of the La Fonda for the start of each activity. Guests and partners attending under the $595 guest fee are welcome at all of these activities.

Wednesday: Welcome Dinner Kick off your Santa Fe writing retreat with a warm welcome dinner. Enjoy a delicious meal, where you can meet and mingle with fellow writers and instructors in a relaxed and charming setting. This intimate gathering sets the stage for a week of creativity and camaraderie.

Thursday: Chocolate-Making Class with Kakawa Chocolate House On Thursday, be amazed and captivated by the long history of chocolate through the masterful storytelling of Kakawa's owner, Bonnie, who will take your taste buds on a sensory chocolate journey. Learn about the ancient roots of chocolate, unusual facts and taste from the seed to the chocolate we know and love today, and everything in between. Enjoy several of Kakawa's world-famous drinking chocolate elixirs and eating chocolates, and even get a peek behind the curtain to see them making their artisan chocolates by hand. Each guest receives a custom curated gift box at completion.

Friday: Walking Tour of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum On Friday morning, we've arranged for exclusive, early access to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Instead of navigating the usual daytime crowds, we'll have the space entirely to ourselves to explore the galleries in complete privacy before the doors officially open.

A museum docent will guide our group through the collection, giving us a closer look at O'Keeffe's path from her early pieces to the striking desert landscapes she's best known for. It's a rare chance to hear the real history behind the art and experience the exhibits up close.

Saturday: Reading & Happy Hour Celebrate the culmination of your Santa Fe writing workshop with an evening of readings and revelry. Share your work and listen to your peers' pieces during our reading session, followed by a lively happy hour.

The experience exceeded my expectations: the meticulous planning and organization, the participants, and particularly, the instructors. Diana Spechler (my nonfiction workshop instructor) was a joy: straight-forward, knowledgeable, supportive and accessible. I left with a solid sense of how to approach my nonfiction work, but more importantly, I greatly appreciated Diana's support of my work in general. How do I get to Santa Fe?

Most participants fly into Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), about an hour's drive from Santa Fe, with shuttle and rental car options available. Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) is closer but has more limited service. Travel to and from Santa Fe is arranged by each participant and is not included in tuition. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Program Deliverables

Tuition entitles each participant to the program elements enumerated on this page, which include lodging for the dates specified, the opening dinner, the scheduled workshop or seminar sessions led by program faculty, a one-on-one conference with your faculty instructor, the daily craft and business of writing seminars, and the included group activities. Written critical feedback on submitted manuscripts is provided by your faculty instructor.

Participants in the Fiction and Nonfiction Workshops are encouraged, but not required, to provide written responses to the work of their fellow participants. Peer feedback is a voluntary contribution made by workshop members to one another and is not a deliverable provided or guaranteed by WritingWorkshops.com. The nature, length, and format of any peer response rests entirely with the individual participant offering it.

Faculty assignments, session times, room assignments, activity schedules, and the specific content of seminars are subject to change. WritingWorkshops.com will make reasonable efforts to provide substitutions of comparable quality in the event of faculty illness, travel disruption, or other circumstances beyond our control. A change in faculty, schedule, or activity does not constitute a failure to deliver the program and does not entitle a participant to a refund outside the refund policy stated below.

Guests and partners attending under the guest fee are entitled to shared lodging in the participant's room for the dates specified and to participation in the included group activities. Guests do not participate in workshops, seminars, manuscript review, or one-on-one conferences, and no manuscript feedback or instructional services are provided to guests.
