INSTRUCTOR BIO

Instructor Tawny Lara is your favorite writing teacher's favorite writing teacher. She teaches ethical, sustainable approaches to storytelling, self-promotion, and creative visibility. She's the author of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze, co-author of The Sobriety Deck, and co-founder of (parentheses) botanical beverages. A journalist by trade, Tawny reports on mental health, the non-alcoholic drink movement, and publishing/media trends through a pop culture lens. Her Substack, Beyond Liquid Courage, is a mix of voicey hot takes and industry insights. You can read Tawny's essay "Finding Your Voice as a Writer in the Age of AI", published via Jane Friedman. But most importantly, she has an eponymous taco in her hometown of Waco, Texas.

This online writing workshop is for nonfiction writers, essayists, and newsletter writers who want to sharpen their perspective and build a stronger, more confident voice. What to expect:

In a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, automation, and AI-generated content, writing that sounds unmistakably human has never been more valuable. This live 2-hour creative writing workshop is based on Tawny Lara's essay exploring what's lost when writers lean too heavily on AI—and what becomes possible when we commit to finding our real voice instead.

Together, we'll explore how AI can flatten originality, why messy first drafts matter, and how to uncover the opinions, obsessions, hot takes, and weird little details that make your writing impossible to replicate. You'll learn what actually makes writing sound like you, identify where your strongest voice already lives (hint: often in your opinions and obsessions), and work through guided prompts designed to help you write with more clarity and conviction.

Expect a lively mix of teaching, discussion, reflection, and generative writing exercises in this online writing class. This isn't about chasing "perfect" writing—it's about creating work that feels alive, risky, and unmistakably yours. AI is a cool tool, but your human voice is even cooler.

Part 1: What Makes Writing Sound Like You — A look at how AI flattens originality and where your strongest, most distinctive voice already exists—in your opinions, obsessions, and the weird little details that are yours alone. Teaching and discussion on voice, creativity, and confidence in the age of AI.

Part 2: Generative Writing — Guided prompts designed to help you write from lived experience with more clarity and conviction, moving past the pull toward "perfect," generated text.

Part 3: Share, Reflect, and Take It Home — Optional sharing of new work with feedback from Tawny and the group, plus practical tools for building self-trust and sustaining a more human writing practice after the workshop ends.
