Who is this class for?

This online poetry workshop is for poets at all levels who are interested in exploring new ways to write about place. Whether you already write frequently about landscape and location or are just beginning to consider how your surroundings might enter your work, this class offers a welcoming space to experiment and grow.

What to expect:

In this generative poetry workshop, you'll explore how landscape, history, and the specificity of location shape poetic voice. Together you'll consider the places you live, the places you come from, and the places you long for as sources of imagery, memory, and meaning. Each session blends craft discussion, close reading, and workshop time to create a rich and supportive creative writing experience.

Instructor Logen Cure brings a deep personal connection to this topic. Her poetry collection Welcome to Midland uses history, nature, culture, legend, gossip, and memory to explore what it means to survive in a harsh environment — and the process of writing it transformed her relationship to her hometown and her own poetic voice. In this online writing class, she'll share the strategies she developed for researching and writing about place, and guide you in applying them to your own work.

Sessions will include exploration of craft concepts such as imagery, voice, and structure; reading and discussion of poems that engage deeply with place; and workshop time to give and receive feedback on poems generated in response to prompts. You'll also explore how researching the natural and cultural history of a place can offer new perspectives on your personal experiences and broaden the possibilities of your poems. All readings will be provided — no textbook purchases required.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will draft at least three new poems rooted in place. Students will learn research strategies for incorporating natural and cultural history into their poems. Students will receive feedback from the instructor during workshop time. The focus of this poetry workshop is to produce new work, engage in community, and increase your confidence and strategies in writing about place.
