Who is this class for?

This online writing class is for poets and essayists who want to pivot to fiction, or any writer who wants to leave one genre for another. Open to writers at all levels, it shows you what to take with you as you genre-bend and how one genre informs another toward building a truly original and compelling writing voice.

What to expect:

If you've written and published nonfiction or poetry, there's no reason you can't dive into fiction. Just go in with your eyes open. In this three-hour writing workshop, aspiring crossover authors and genre-straddlers will learn how to take tidbits from poetry and nonfiction to make their fiction come alive. Every genre has something to offer another genre, and you'll learn what to take from each to make your best work yet.

Participants will walk away with a strong sense of how to straddle genres, what to take from one genre into another, and how to make the crossover successful when it comes to getting published.

Lynne has made this crossover herself. She earned an MFA in poetry and has two poetry collections out, has written creative nonfiction essays for decades that regularly appear in literary journals, worked as a journalist for 15 years, and is now an award-winning novelist. In this live Zoom writing class, she shows how each of those forays informs the others, and how yours can too.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will gain a clear understanding of what each genre offers to another, learn how to weave specific approaches, details, and styles of one genre into another, and discover how to draw from every genre they write in to create a compelling, original writing voice all their own.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • A clear understanding of what poetry, nonfiction, and fiction each offer one another.
  • Techniques for weaving the approaches, details, and styles of one genre into another.
  • Specific ways to bring the tools of poetry and nonfiction into your fiction to make it come alive.
  • A strategy for making a genre crossover successful when it comes to getting published.
  • A compelling, original writing voice drawn from every genre you write in.

TESTIMONIALS:

"Lynne holds the keys to the poetry queendom. She is clear, kind, and sparks ideas like crazy. I appreciate her best of all the poetry teachers I have had, including those at NYU where I majored in Poetry!"

— Laurie M.

"I really enjoyed my first Writing Workshop! I was surprised to find a class so perfectly geared toward what I needed and my skill and comfort level. I had no idea though of the inspiration, community, and support I would get from taking it. Lynne created an incredibly safe space for the class to come together, feel inspired, learn about ourselves and the craft of writing, and most importantly, to get us writing. I enjoyed the readings, and haven't felt this inspired to write in a long time. Well worth the cost and the risk of trying something new."

— Ali S.

"This class has become the best part of my week."

— Olivet J.

"I have loved being with you and the other students, and the assignments have been great. You are a fabulous teacher."

"The writers workshop helped me explore a part of my personality and interests that I hadn't yet allowed myself to dig into. I feel more connected to who I am as a writer as well as all the other wonderful writers who participated. One of my favorite aspects of the workshop was being in a safe space, sharing a variety of pieces with people of different backgrounds and perspectives. Not only have I learned more about myself and others, but I have been exposed to so many new genres and writing topics. Thanks, Lynne!"
