Who is this class for?

This writing workshop is for anyone curious about using visual imagery and symbolism to spark their creative writing. No Tarot experience or prior knowledge is required — if you've never seen a Tarot card before, you're still very much in the right place. All levels welcome, from complete beginners to seasoned writers looking for fresh, unconventional prompts.

What to expect:

In this 2-hour generative online writing class, you'll use Tarot imagery across the ages as creative writing prompts. Think art history meets journaling, with zero pressure and zero fortune-telling — just a relaxed, inspiring space to write, think, and explore. What began as a card game for the Italian elite in the 1600s has evolved into an entire visual and cultural language, and Tawny brings that rich history into the writing workshop as fuel for creativity.

You'll start with a friendly Tarot 101 introduction to suits, court cards, and the major and minor arcana. From there, you'll explore Tarot imagery from the 1600s through modern decks, paired with guided writing prompts designed to help you investigate your current creative project — whether you're stuck, starting, or mid-flow. You'll also connect Tarot imagery to your own life experiences to develop meaningful, personalized writing prompts.

This online writing class is purely about using Tarot as a creative tool. No divination, no fortune-telling, no woo woo required. Just curiosity, a pen, and a willingness to play. All cards discussed will appear in Tawny's slides, but you're welcome to bring your own deck if you'd like. The final 10 minutes are open for Q&A on writing, publishing, journalism, media, podcasting, and creative goal-setting.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will generate new writing during guided prompt sessions using Tarot imagery as a starting point. Students will produce multiple short generative pieces during the workshop and develop personalized writing prompts they can continue using after the class. Feedback will be offered through group discussion and Tawny's real-time guidance during the live Zoom session.
