Who is this class for?

This online writing workshop is for writers at all levels who want to turn their past relationships into compelling personal essays. Whether you're processing heartbreak, reflecting on a friendship that ended, or just ready to finally put that story on the page, this class welcomes anyone who's been holding back from writing about the people who shaped them.

What to expect:

Looking to bring out your inner Taylor Swift or Carly Rae Jepsen? Some of our most powerful and consuming emotions revolve around someone we used to know or can't get out of our heads. Romantic and platonic love affairs create formative experiences, but writers often feel like they need to hold back when talking about them.

This three-week online writing class teaches writers to break through their fear and take charge of their past experiences. Be it the terror of heartbreak or the horror of having to leave someone at the altar, this creative writing workshop will help you take your inner crazy ex out of the box and your writing from diary entry to a compelling piece of literature that will feel sweeter than revenge.

Class meetings will be held over video chat, using Zoom accessed from our private class page. Come prepared for a super fun class with live interaction each week and plenty of writing, reading, and talking!

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will:

  • Receive writing prompts designed to help break through emotional or mental blocks
  • Participate in in-class discussion about the best shape and angle for their stories
  • Have two chances to have their work critiqued by the group and by Elizabeth
  • Generate ideas of where to pitch and submit their finished work

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • A generative list of story ideas and publications to submit to
  • A formula for crafting a great ex-focused pitch (personal essay, reported, or first-person reported)
  • An understanding of relationship writing ethics
  • The confidence to unapologetically write about your ex, in your own way

TESTIMONIALS:

"As a returning student of Elizabeth's, I am a lifelong fan. She assigns thought-provoking readings, crafts the most creative writing prompts, and inspires her students to expand their skills and confidence. Elizabeth's deep knowledge of the literary world is invaluable, but what sets her apart is the care she brings to her feedback. She takes the time to read your work closely, offering thoughtful, insightful guidance tailored to your goals. Receiving her critiques is one of the most rewarding parts of the learning process. I hope every writer has the chance to cross paths with Elizabeth on their journey." — Waresa H.

"I took the writing about your ex workshop with Elizabeth and was blown away at what I was able to produce after just 3 weeks under her guidance. She immediately had us writing with incredible prompts and offered insightful feedback. From her workshop alone, I was able to produce 5 different pieces that I've now published on my Substack (one of them landing me a surge of paid subscribers!) Thank you Elizabeth - you're the perfect teacher for this class - I'd definitely take it again!" — Chelsea R.

"Taking Elizabeth's class on obsessions and pop culture helped me expand my thinking and writing about the things I love. Elizabeth's thoughtful choices for our weekly reading served as springboards and models for my thinking and writing, and her prompts for in-class writing were generative and helpful. I was incredibly grateful for Elizabeth's line edits and willingness to push me to the next level in my work. I left the class with an essay I felt proud of and the seeds of many more. I highly recommend this class if you're interested in learning how to utilize your obsessions to fuel the writing of entertaining, thoughtful essays and learning more about how to place these essays." — Amy E.
