Taught by Elise Chatelain, Ph.D., a writer, researcher, and editor with over 20 years of teaching experience. She has a cultural studies and sociology background and has taught research methods at several universities. Elise is co-founder of Dismantle Magazine, and works with writers to help them find their voice and tell their stories.

This class will introduce you to techniques from anthropology that you can apply to your own creative writing process. Writing of any kind can be enriched by descriptions grounded in thoughtful observations and sensory data. Good storytelling relies on empathy and recognition.

Approaches from anthropology—like fieldwork, participant observation, and in-depth interviews—help us understand the cultural context and human experiences. They can also help us generate immersive worlds that draw readers into a text with strong characters and creative narratives.

In this course, we will practice writing beyond our own perspective using established techniques from studying culture. Additionally, we will explore questions of power that are important for all writers and cultural producers to consider. These lessons are central to cultural inquiry and can help you strengthen your writing overall.

There will be light but informative readings and exercises to help participants apply their growing skills to their writing practice.
