From Productive to "Completely Leveled Up": How One Teacher-Writer Found His Breakthrough
RJ Bee has always been productive with his writing. As a high school math teacher who runs not one but two podcasts, the Helping Friendly Podcast, which focuses on music and storytelling, and Library Card, dedicated to discussions of books and short stories, he knew how to create engaging content and tell compelling stories. But something was missing. He needed to take his craft to the next level.
That's when he discovered WritingWorkshops.com and enrolled in a one-on-one workshop with award-winning author Kelly Luce.
The Transformation
When asked to complete the sentence "Before taking the workshop, my writing life was _____, but now it's _____," RJ's response was immediate and telling: "was productive, but now it's completely leveled up."
That level-up wasn't just about writing more; it was about writing smarter.
Through his intensive work with Kelly, RJ began thinking differently about every short story idea he had. The workshop transformed his approach to structure, language, and narrative arc in ways he hadn't considered before.
The Breakthrough Moment
Every writer who has taken a workshop knows there's usually that one moment, that lightbulb realization, that changes everything. For RJ, it was learning "how and when to unveil the details of the story."
This seemingly simple insight has continued to influence his writing long after the one-on-one boot camp with Kelly Luce ended. It's the kind of breakthrough that doesn't just improve one story; it transforms every story that follows.
The Result: Publication Success
RJ's hard work and new perspective paid off. He recently had a short story published in Empyrean Literary Magazine, a significant achievement for any writer. But more importantly, he now has a collection of short story ideas that he's approaching with newfound confidence and sophistication.
When asked what he enjoyed most about his class with Kelly, RJ highlighted "learning in depth about the editing process"—that often-overlooked craft element that separates good stories from great ones.
Advice for Fellow Writers
RJ's secret weapon for pushing through when writing gets tough: Taking it all one step at a time. It's practical wisdom from someone who balances teaching, two podcasts, and a serious writing practice.
For writers considering a workshop, his advice is straightforward: "If you want in-depth evaluation and help on a story, it's a great way to get better."
