Anne Hellman's debut novel, The Indecipherables, arrives from Bantam on January 19, 2027. Between now and then, the best thing any of us can do for it is pre-order a copy. We'd love for you to get yours from Books Are Magic, the independent bookstore in Brooklyn.

Anne joined our 2023 Writing Workshop in Dublin and spent the week at the table with Stewart O'Nan. The novel follows estranged twin sisters on a road trip meant to mend things after a betrayal and a mysterious illness. Then identical doppelgangers start following them. Anne wrote the book as a tribute to Hitchcock's Psycho and Vertigo, which should tell you the flavor of dread she's after.

"Part Twilight Zone, part Mulholland Drive, Anne Hellman's debut is a tantalizing detour into the uncanny."

Stewart O'Nan, author of Emily, Alone and Henry, Himself

Pre-orders count toward first-week sales, and they tell booksellers how many copies to put on the shelf. For a debut, that early signal carries a lot of weight. Ordering through an indie puts it in the hands of people who hand-sell books for a living.

Congratulations, Anne. We've been waiting for this one since Dublin.
