Led by Tommy Dean, Editor-in-Chief at Fractured Lit and Uncharted Magazine. He is the author of two flash fiction chapbooks Special Like the People on TV (Redbird Chapbooks, 2014) and Covenants (ELJ Editions, 2021), and a full flash collection, Hollows (Alternating Current Press, 2022). Tommy's students have published work in SmokeLong Quarterly, Pithead Chapel, Maudlin House, X-R-A-Y Literary Magazine, New World Writing, Fictive Dream, 2021 Wigleaf Top 50 longlist, WOW! Women on Writing Spring 2021 Flash Fiction Contest winner, Bending Genres, jmww, Best Small Fictions 2021, The Los Angeles Review, Longleaf Review, and elsewhere.
As a class, we will dig deeper into the craft decisions writers make on the page. We'll structure choices and target specific skills you can use to create your own body of flash fiction or nonfiction. Using these elements of craft, we will create fresh flash full of resonate concision, and you'll leave the class with new work that prizes both depth and urgency.
Craft materials, lectures, reading assignments, and writing prompts are all available through the online classroom. Students also post work and provide and receive constructive criticism within the online classroom environment (Wet Ink).
Each student will receive constructive criticism from me on each prompt they respond to (1 per week or a total of 4 for the class) and have the opportunity for 1 full workshop critique from me. Students are expected to provide comments on each flash workshopped in this class. Students will receive lecture notes and analysis of 2 flash per week.
- A better understanding of the plot and structural conventions of Flash Fiction
- 2 to 4 potentially publishable flash or micro stories (50-1,000 words in length)
- A list of magazines/journals that are ideal places for your work
- A plan to submit stories to magazines/journals
- A clearer and stronger sense of your writing sensibilities and tendencies unique to your work and style
- A clearer sense of future writing goals
- The ability to self-critique your writing
- How to use model texts to explore and utilize craft moves

ONLINE COURSE STRUCTURE:
This class is entirely asynchronous which means you complete the weekly assignments on your own schedule. There are no set meeting times in order to allow for greater participation; your cohort will consist of writers from across different time zones, which allows for a wonderful diversity of voices.
Along with your weekly deadlines there is plenty of interaction with Tommy and your peers within Wet Ink, our dedicated online classroom. Craft materials, lectures, reading assignments, and writing prompts are all available through the online classroom. Students also post work and provide and receive feedback within the online classroom environment.
You can get the work done as you see fit week-to-week, so it is perfect for any schedule. There are discussion questions each week inspired by the assigned readings and topics in the lecture notes. Students are encouraged to take these wherever is most compelling and/or useful for them. Tommy engages with these discussions throughout the week and you will receive feedback from all assigned writing activities.
