She holds an MFA from New York University, where she was a Goldwater Fellow, an MFA from Lesley University, and teaches writing at Fordham. Her students have been published in the NYTimes, LATimes, won awards, and sold books.

If you're working on a nonfiction book (anything from a memoir to a how-to), you can sell it based on a killer book proposal. Learn the elements of a strong book proposal, write your own and get feedback in this step-by-step class.

We'll learn the parts and purposes of a killer book proposal, and you'll receive a template we'll work with throughout the entire course as we walk through the process.

We will clarify and solidify the message and angle of your book, then work on a different element of the proposal each week moving forward to help you complete a solid draft.

Throughout this 8-week intensive, which is limited to eight students, you'll generate writing toward your own proposal and will receive feedback.

Students will read sample book proposals, and other readings will be assigned based on the students in class.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS:

  • You will complete a draft of a book proposal you can use to query agents and editors.
  • You'll come to understand the parts of a successful proposal and what each part means.
  • You'll clarify not just your book's scope and message but why you're the person to write it, i.e. your connection to your own project.

COURSE SKELETON:

Week One: Welcome to the Proposal! And to Each Other's Work (sharing of the form of the proposal and student/ course intentions)

Week Two: The Overview/ Introduction and About the Author sections

Week Three: Target Audience and Comp. Titles, Week four: Marketing and Promotion

Week Five: Chapter Overview

Week Six: Sample Chapters

Week Seven: Group Workshop
