Taught by New Yorker contributor Frances Badalamenti, author of the books I Don’t Blame You, Salad Days, and Many Seasons, this class will take a deep dive into the unique and lively genre of autofiction. There will also be a specific emphasis on the history and practice of autofiction in France, where the genre’s origins are known to be rooted.
This dynamic discussion will provide insight into the many nuances and specifics of French autofiction.
Frances will provide novel excerpts and craft essays for group discussion, which will be read ahead of time. Additionally, there will be time for writing exercises and the opportunity to share your work (optional).
You can be a writer at any level or a curious reader; there are no prerequisites, as this class is open to anyone interested in exploring French autofiction.
TAKE THIS CLASS IF:
- You’re curious to learn more about autofiction as a genre and, more specifically, French writers of this form.
- You’re looking for inspiration and/or to possibly begin writing in this style.
- You’d like to engage in a lively discussion about contemporary autofiction writers such as (but not limited to): Marcel Proust, Roland Barthes, Marguerite Duras, Annie Erneaux, Édouard Louis, Hervé Guibert, Emmanuel Carrère, and Nina Bouraoui.
YOU'LL TAKE HOME:
- A broad understanding of what autofiction means, in addition some knowledge in and around its French origins.
- Inspiration and knowledge that you can apply to your writing and/or reading practices.
- An expanded list of autofiction titles for further reading and study.

Instructor Frances Badalamenti is the author of the novels, I Don't Blame You (2019), Salad Days (2021) and Many Seasons (2024). Some of her shorter work can be found at The New Yorker, The Believer Magazine, BOMB Magazine, Longreads and elsewhere. She teaches writing workshops and works individually as a mentor for writers. Frances lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and son.
