Writing Workshops Dublin 2025

Writing Workshops Dublin with Christine Pride, Tawny Lara, and Alyssa Songsiridej brings together fiction and nonfiction writers for an intensive week of workshops, craft seminars, one-on-one conferences, and in-depth discussions on the craft and business of writing. Our program is intentionally small and will take place in the heart of literary Dublin.

Each fiction and nonfiction workshop will have no more than 10 participants each. All writers will submit two completed pieces of writing. One submission will be workshopped by your cohort and instructor and a second piece will be submitted for your one-on-one meeting with your workshop leader. Daily craft talks are open to all participants and led by program staff or faculty.

Our workshops are open to writers who want to strengthen their voice, develop a greater understanding of craft, and forge a path to publication along the way. We take your writing seriously and place the highest importance on teaching the craft of writing so that students can produce meaningful and memorable work that has the opportunity to find a readership beyond the workshop.

Since 2016, our mission has been to bring your writing out of the wilderness and into community, and for a week every May we think there is no better place for our workshop retreat than on Ireland’s east coast at the mouth of the River Liffey. Scroll down for more details!

Fáilte! Applications for our May 2025 Dublin workshops are now open.

2025 Workshop Dates:

May 4th - May 9th, 2025

Though our admissions process is competitive and the quality of writing high, all interested writers are encouraged to apply.

2025 Dublin Workshop Faculty:

Included Optional Evening Activities

If you are able, we encourage you to attend our afternoon activities and group dinners (activities are included in the cost of the workshop, but everyone will be responsible for covering their own dinner and drinks). We will meet in the lobby of The Iveagh Garden Hotel for the start of each activity.

LITERARY PUB CRAWL (MONDAY)

Get a taste of literary Dublin by touring its pubs! The literary pub crawl will take us to many of Dublin’s most historic and famous pubs that were frequented by some of Ireland's most celebrated writers and literary figures, such as Joyce, Wilde, Behan and many more. During the tour, professional actors will share stories and anecdotes about the writers and their connection to the pubs, as well as the rich history of Dublin and Ireland. You'll also get to taste some of the city's famous beers and whiskies and perhaps even hear a bit of live Irish music. Dinner will take place beforehand at The Duke Pub, which is also the first stop on our pub crawl.

HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR (TUESDAY)

See the sites of Dublin with Historical Walking Tours of Dublin, the city’s longest-established walking tour. This two-hour walk will take you past all the major sites in Central Dublin, presented by a witty and entertaining guide. The walk will go rain or shine, so have an umbrella ready just in case…this is Ireland after all. After the walking tour we will head straight to dinner. Each cohort will go out to dinner separately.

VISIT TO HOWTH (WEDNESDAY)

Howth, a picturesque coastal village, captivates visitors with its stunning landscapes, rugged cliffs, and a bustling harbor. Steeped in literary history, Howth served as a muse for esteemed writers like W.B. Yeats and James Joyce, who found inspiration in its enchanting scenery and incorporated the village into their works, adding a touch of literary magic to this charming destination. A shuttle will pick us up from the hotel. When we arrive in Howth, you will have the option to either take a boat tour, or go for a hike. Both activities will proceed rain or shine. We will then reconvene as a group for dinner at Beshoffs Sea Grill, before heading back to Dublin.

ONE PAGE SALON (THURSDAY)

On our final night together we will gather in the Black Door Bar inside the Harcourt Hotel for a reading and toast starting at 3:45 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to read a one-page sample of their work, and it does not have to be something you workshopped. After the reading we will head across the street for one final dinner at Sophie’s Rooftop Restaurant.

Testimonials For Our Dublin Retreats

"The actual writing workshop did more for me in four days than my MFA did in two years. Elissa Bassist is amazing. I would attend another course with her in pretty much any city. She was the reason I registered for the Dublin workshop in the first place and I have absolutely no regrets. I would absolutely recommend it for someone looking for inspiration and to bring life back to their work. Elissa made me see my work in a new light that completely transformed my own understanding of my writing. If you're looking for both a wonderful trip and an opportunity to refocus creatively, this is definitely the workshop for you! The feedback from the other participants was a lot more than I was expecting, which was a positive! I felt a lot more inspired than I did throughout most of my graduate school work." -Rachel G.

"There's not enough words to fully describe how amazing this workshop retreat was for me. Between the instructors, the city, the feedback, and the writing -- I was in writerly heaven. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to experience it, because it's something I will remember forever." -Jade E.

"During the day, I'm an events manager at one of the most prestigious universities in the world - and I was blown away by the level of customer service that the Writing Workshop staff provided, as well as the incredible week-long schedule that they created for us. Every day provided a chance to bond with my cohort and mentor, listen to a seminar from a published author, and participate in a fun evening activity. If you're looking for a chance to "get away from it all" and focus on your writing with other aspiring authors, I would highly suggest applying to this program!" -Alison H.

"The combination of high-caliber writers and exciting locations is what drew me in. I had no idea just how life changing my time in Dublin would be. I came home with lasting friendships, meaningful memories and thoughtful suggestions to improve my work in progress. I'd recommend these workshops to any writer." -Carol D.

The workshop completely exceeded my expectations, not only because of the transformative feedback I received in the workshop but also because of the friendships I came away with. The organization and communication; the workshops, craft talks and one-on-one; the hikes, tours, and meals--all exceeded my expectations. I've taken many workshops, including an MFA program. Ethan Joella was an outstanding workshop leader--approachable, mindful about time, and generous with craft tips. He was even better as an editor on my workshop piece and during our one-on-one. So helpful! The breakfast at the hotel was outstanding and fantastic, and the staff friendly and helpfull. And the hotel was terrific! I loved it!" -Jessica O.

"With its literary legacy and boundless history, Dublin is an inspiring place for a writing workshop. I was most inspired by the skill, warmth, and creativity of all the writers in my nonfiction group and our workshop leader, and I left with new energy to work on my project." -Caroline P.

Not only did I get thorough and helpful feedback on my own work, but the general group discussions on writing and publishing were very informative. I will definitely do another workshop in the future!" -Dana Z.

"Writing Workshops Dublin is wonderful in every way. Blake and Mike thought through the details of workshops, craft talks, one-on-ones, tours followed by dinners, the hotel’s location, and probably more that happened behind the scenes. They are gracious, generous, and funny! The workshop facilitators, Stuart and Diana, are personable and generous with their knowledge and experience. The other writers are now friends and writing buddies. I left Dublin full of happy memories and with a stronger vision for my novel-in-progress. Thank you for an outstanding week!" -Jenn G.

"Everything about the Dublin retreat was excellent. I was able to gain knowledge that I can apply immediately. The pacing, work time, advice and critiques were all useful. My instructor, Amber Sparks, was great. I am doing a deep revision based on her feedback now. And the add on was a great way to see more of Ireland. The Dunloe Hotel was fabulous." -Loran M.

"Writing Workshops Dublin was far and beyond the best workshop I've attended in a very long time. The city of Dublin was the perfect place to home in on my current projects with a group of talented, dedicated writers. The workshop instructors were the best I've worked with. I will never forget what I gained during that short week, and will keep in touch with so many of the people I met. Thank you for an incredible experience!" -Anne H.

"I arrived in Dublin for the Writing Workshop a little uncertain about how it was going to work. It was my first time in a nonfiction workshop, and I only knew one other person. The experience exceeded my expectations: the meticulous planning and organization, the participants, and particularly, the instructors. Diana Spechler (my nonfiction workshop instructor) was a joy: straight-forward, knowledgeable, supportive and accessible. I left with a solid sense of how to approach my nonfiction work, but more importantly, I greatly appreciated Diana's support of my work in general. I would recommend the Writing Workshop in Dublin to anyone who wants to combine a week of exploration, history, new friends, and terrific instruction ." -Joanna S.

"I received great feedback from the group. I've always wanted to go to Dublin, and I found writing towards this deadline extremely helpful, and I'm proud of the friendships and connections made! My social and "networking" expectations were met and exceeded!" -Bridget F.

"The Dublin workshop provided a fun, safe, and encouraging learning environment, while also giving truly useful and challenging feedback on our work.  Everyone in my group walked out a stronger writer.  And to get to do all of that in the heart of Dublin was a real gift!" -Jenny S.

"The Dublin Workshop more than delivered on its promise. Great, insightful discussions in the workshops, an invaluable one-on-one opportunity with a world-class novelist, and a new circle of talented and supportive writing partners." -Rita M.

"Do this if you are serious about writing." -Jeannette B.

"It was amazing. I am so so grateful that I was chosen to be a part of such a special space and rich experience." --Dakotah J.

"Hands down the best workshop feedback I’ve ever received. I felt so lucky to be a part of this workshop and really enjoy the friendships I forged." - Ben H.

"For me, as a yet-unpublished writer, it was a great introduction to the world of workshopping. I felt comfortable sharing my stories with this helpful, diverse and dedicated group. And even though I'm daunted by the amount of work I have ahead of me, I'm inspired to start combining my stories into a memoir--something I hadn't considered before." -Sue P.

"This workshop exceeded my expectations. The classroom critiques and instructor one-on-ones were extremely helpful, the people were wonderful, and the atmosphere was inviting. It was an experience I'm so glad I didn't miss." - Carissa C.

"The communication leading up to the workshop was excellent. Diana was a wonderful workshop leader and I would gladly take a class from her again. As organizers, Blake and Mike cover all the bases so attendees can totally relax in the environment and focus on writing and group connections. The overall experience, the inclusion of food and housing, the community that was built, the work we did -- thumbs up on everything!" -Catherine V.

"Best experience I've had as a writer. I have done writing workshops before, but nothing like this one. I received genuinely transformative feedback, knowledge, and social support around my writing and novel. I will always be grateful for all I gained, learned, and experienced in this workshop. I can wholeheartedly say that the amateur writer who came into this workshop is now a tremendously evolved amateur writer with a new lens on transferring thought into text. I learned so much about my own craft, and how to tailor the style, and plot points to better suit the story I want to tell. The adventures, authors, experiences, feedback, people, places and workshops were gratifyingly high quality. It felt safe being an amateur. I received transformative feedback on my current WIP which has greatly shifted the ways I write." -Enrique E.
