Workshop Faculty

Nonfiction Workshop Instructor Marin Sardy is the author of the critically lauded memoir The Edge of Every Day (Pantheon, 2019). Sardy’s work has appeared in the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Tin House, Guernica, the Missouri Review, and many other journals, as well as in two award-winning photography books. Her essays have twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and three times listed as “notable” in the Best American series. She teaches memoir and personal essay writing and is excited to meet and work with you in Santa Fe this April.

 

Fiction Workshop Instructor Swan Huntley’s novels include I Want You More, Getting Clean with Stevie Green, The Goddesses, and We Could Be Beautiful. She’s also the writer/illustrator of the darkly humorous The Bad Mood Book and You’re Grounded: An Anti-Self-Help Book to Calm You the F*ck Down. Swan earned an MFA at Columbia University and has received fellowships from MacDowell and Yaddo. She lives in Los Angeles, and can't wait to work with you in Santa Fe!

Class Size

Each genre workshop will have no more than 10 participants, led by the genre faculty instructor. Daily craft talks are open to all participants and led by program staff or faculty.

Fiction & Nonfiction Workshops:
Ahead of our arrival in Santa Fe, fiction and nonfiction students will submit two manuscripts. One manuscript of up to 5,000 words will be critiqued in the group workshop and include letters of critique from your peers and instructor; your second manuscript of up to 5,000 words will be discussed in a one-on-one conference with your instructor in Santa Fe. All writers can submit up to 10,000 words in total between their two manuscript submissions.

Included Optional Evening Activities

If you are able, we encourage you to attend our afternoon activities and group dinners (activities are included in the cost of the workshop, but everyone will be responsible for covering their own dinner and drinks). We will meet in the lobby of the La Fonda for the start of each activity. 

Wednesday: Welcome Dinner

Kick off your Santa Fe writing retreat with a warm welcome dinner. Enjoy a delicious meal, where you can meet and mingle with fellow writers and instructors in a relaxed and charming setting. This intimate gathering sets the stage for a week of creativity and camaraderie.

Thursday: Historic Santa Fe Walking Tour

On Thursday, we will explore the vibrant history of Santa Fe on a walking tour led by a seasoned local guide. Imagine strolling through narrow, adobe-lined streets where every corner has a story. We’ll uncover the layers of Native American, Spanish, and Anglo influences that make this city so unique. Our guide will share insider tidbits about landmarks like centuries-old churches, historic homes, and the bustling Plaza that’s been the city’s heartbeat for over 400 years. This isn’t just a walk—it’s a deep dive into the colorful tapestry of Santa Fe’s past.

Friday: Chocolate-Making Class at Kakawa Chocolate House

On Friday, be amazed and captivated by the long history of chocolate through the masterful storytelling of Kakawa's owner, Bonnie, who will take your taste buds on a sensory chocolate journey. Learn about the ancient roots of chocolate, unusual facts and taste from the seed to the chocolate we know and love today, and everything in between. Enjoy several of our world-famous drinking chocolate elixirs and eating chocolates and even get a peek ‘behind the curtain’ to see us making our artisan chocolates by hand. Each guest receives a custom curated gift box at completion.


Saturday: Reading & Happy Hour Followed by Farewell Dinner

Celebrate the culmination of your Santa Fe writing workshop with an evening of readings and revelry. Share your work and listen to your peers' pieces during our reading session, followed by a lively happy hour. Conclude the night with a memorable farewell dinner, savoring delectable cuisine while reflecting on the week’s experiences and newfound friendships.

Tuition

Tuition is $2,995 for your own room, or $2,295 to share a room with two double beds. Tuition includes the following:

 

  • Lodging at La Fonda on the Plaza for 5 days, 4 nights 
  • Welcome dinner and drinks on the first night.     
  • 3-day writing workshops in small groups of no more than 10 writers, let by program faculty.     
  • Critical feedback on writing submissions.     
  • Daily craft of writing and/or business of writing seminars.    
  • One-on-one conference with faculty.     
  • A walking tour of historic Santa Fe led by a local expert.     
  • A group chocolate making class with Kakawa Chocolate House.     
  • Hors d'oeuvres at the final reading.     
  • Please note: Aside from the opening dinner, meals are not included in the price of tuition.

How much does it cost?

Tuition is $2,995 for your own room or $2,295 to share a room with two double beds. If your application is accepted, full tuition is due within 14 days. Upon acceptance, you will have the option to pay your tuition in full or opt for a payment plan by selecting Affirm at checkout.

What is your refund policy for the workshop in Santa Fe?

Given the intimate nature of our destination workshops and our own, non-refundable deposit schedule as organizers, our refund policy is as follows: 

90+ days before your trip, tuition payment minus a $900 deposit is fully refundable.  

60+ days before your trip: 50% of your tuition is refundable.  

30+ days before your: 25% of your tuition is refundable.  

Less than 30 days before your trip: no refunds can be offered.

By making your tuition payment in full, you agree to these terms.

Are Payment Plans Available?

Yes. Accepted writers will have the option to pay their tuition in full or opt for a payment plan divided into equal monthly payments by selecting Affirm (for U.S. & Canadian residents) at checkout.

Are Scholarships Available?

Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to offer scholarships for this workshop. However, we do have payment plans available at checkout.
