Abi Maxwell is the author of the novels Lake People and The Den. Her memoir, One Day I'll Grow Up and Be a Beautiful Woman, explores parenting and transgender rights in rural America. After graduating from the writing program at the University of Montana, she spent many years working as a public librarian and a high school librarian in her home state of New Hampshire. She now lives in California, writing and advocating for transgender youth.

Who is this workshop for? 

This workshop is for people who have been turning over a novel idea for weeks, months, or years and/or for those who have written parts of the novel yet feel stuck with where to go.

In this process-focused generator workshop, we will explore elements of the craft, from freewriting to choosing POV to shaping tension. Along the way, we will never lose sight of our main goal: to help you find the motivation and faith it takes to stick with such a long (and often lonely) project. 

What to expect: 

In this course, we will talk and play a lot with process. We will also read each other's work, and use examples from workshop to examine elements of craft that will be instructive for all. By the end of the course, the goal is that each class member will have entered their novel--either a first draft or a rewrite--and have a plan for how to move forward through at least the first quarter to third of the novel. 

Each student will submit up to twenty pages for workshop, as well as a reflection on where they intend to go and ideas about what they could do when stuck.
