Led by Katie Reilly, a freelance journalist and attorney based in the Bay Area in California. Katie's writing generally focuses on women's health, mental health and parenting. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Elle Magazine, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, USA Today and HuffPost, among other publications.

Getting published is often a daunting process for writers. It’s hard to determine what the right publication or editor for your story is, and there is not enough information online. It can feel like there is a great divide between you and the editors that you hope to work with.

In this two-hour publishing panel, led by journalist Katie Reilly, we’re hoping to change that dynamic. In two separate forty-minute sessions, we’ll hear from two editors in each session. There will also be a ten-minute break at the end of the hour and a brief recap after each editor panel.

Guest Editors will include:

The editors will talk about the types of stories they’re looking for, what makes a compelling pitch and article, and what makes them want to work with writers again. We’ll also learn more about their writing process and insight into the media landscape. I’ll lead the panels with questions, but students are welcome to ask questions as well.

Please note: We will not discuss the details of a pitch or how to write one. If you'd like additional information on that, you may want to consider taking Getting Publishing in Magazines & Newspapers Even With Limited Clips first.

Can't Make It Live?

No problem! The session will be recorded and available to watch after the seminar concludes.

TESTIMONIALS:

"This class really helped me. As a new writer, trying to get her feet wet, I learned quite a bit about how to pitch and what editors are looking for. This class answered questions and provided a great introduction to freelance work. Katie Reilly and Noah Michelson were engaging and had plenty of advice for new writers. I highly recommend." -former student

"This was a tremendously informative panel. The most valuable part for me was having the opportunity to hear exactly what editors are looking for, both in the pitch email itself and in the essay/draft. There were so many specific details discussed (e.g., what to include in the email subject line, what types of topics and themes each publication and editor is looking for right now), and I feel like I gained a lot of very tangible tips. As someone brand new to pitching and publishing in magazines and newspapers, I feel less overwhelmed. Katie Reilly did an excellent job moderating and asking the editors questions, and I've benefited from both classes I've now been lucky enough to take with Katie." -former student

"Today's editor panel was amazing, Katie! Thank you for putting it together and moderating it. This was one of the most valuable two-hour sessions I have spent in a writing course. Thank you!" -former student

"As a novice to the pitching and publishing world, this Getting Published with Limited Clips class and the information presented by Katie Reilly felt super accessible. This was my first class with Writing Workshops, and I wasn't sure what to expect—it was definitely a valuable experience, and I immediately signed up for another one of Katie's classes in May. The information was all so clear and practical, and I feel much less overwhelmed than I did prior to the class." -former student

"Getting Published In Magazines & Newspapers Even With Limited Clips was a very informative class. The instructor, Katie Reilly, covered many topics that fit under this course title. Katie seamlessly hybrid lecture-style with engaging community peer interaction. She accounted for breaks within her presentation to answer questions along the way, rather than at the very end. I was surprised to know that she invited HuffPost Personal editor Noah Michelsen to join the class for the second half for a Q&A session. This was very helpful in my learning. I also appreciated that Katie shared her slideshow presentation in an email post-class so I can use as a tool on my writing journey." - former student

"Katie Reilly's approach to teaching is very tailored to the students -- she goes out of her way to find readings that align with the topics and styles that students express interest in. Her feedback is encouraging, constructive, and candid, and always very applicable and actionable. She's very motivating and being able to look forward to submitting a draft to her (and getting her feedback on it) has really helped me overcome my perfectionistic-anxiety-barrier to starting a piece. My experiences in her classes have been very generative and helpful in getting words on the page! What I found most valuable: Being able to ask Katie off-the-cuff questions during/after class and over email. Workshopping essay ideas with her and the other class members. Hearing from guest speakers (editors). Hearing from other people about how their own experience with grief informed their responses to the assigned readings." -former student

"I loved Katie Reilly's Nonfiction Seminar on writing the Personal Reported Essay. So much thought went into the assigned readings. Katie's scaffolding and feedback on essay ideas and Katie's feedback on the final draft were excellent. Highly recommend!" -former student

"I took the Getting Published with Limited Clips seminar with Katie Reilly. It was excellent. The most valuable part of the seminar was the personalization to every attendee, and the guest editor that Katie brought in was golden." -former student

"Katie Reilly was a wonderful teacher. She was so responsive to emails and student questions and her feedback on essays was masterful and so specific. I could tell that she really cared about each writer's journey and was committed to helping each student writer be better. She really took time to go above and beyond!" -former student
