This online writing workshop is for fiction writers who want to learn how to integrate fairy tale elements into their contemporary short fiction. Open to all levels, this course welcomes anyone drawn to the magical, the gothic, and the transformative power of reimagined tales.

What to expect:

"Reading a book is life re-writing it for yourself." – Angela Carter

Explore the magical world of Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber in this 4-week short story workshop. Under the influence of Carter's unique style and themes, Davis will help writers learn how to infuse their work with complexity and the otherworldly. This online writing class combines close reading, craft analysis, and generative writing prompts to help you develop your own fairy tale-inspired fiction.

Through reading, analysis, and generative writing prompts, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for Angela Carter's writing. They will also develop practical skills for crafting fairy tale-inspired narratives that grip readers' attention. This fiction writing workshop includes both peer feedback and private instructor feedback, giving you multiple perspectives on your work.

Note: Our peer workshop will utilize a strict deadline to turn in your short story as a courtesy to ensure all participants have the same amount of time to participate and provide feedback to each other.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, participants will read and discuss all of Carter's The Bloody Chamber, as well as craft and submit one short story (up to 8,000 words) for feedback. Along with your weekly deadlines, there is plenty of interaction with Lauren and your peers within Wet Ink, our dedicated online classroom. Craft materials, lectures, reading assignments, and writing prompts are all available through the online classroom. Students also post work and provide and receive feedback within the online classroom environment.

You can get the work done as you see fit, week to week, so it is perfect for any schedule. There are discussion questions each week, inspired by the assigned readings and the lecture notes. Students are encouraged to take these wherever they are most compelling and/or useful for them. Lauren engages with these discussions throughout the week, and you will receive feedback from all assigned writing activities.
