Writing Workshops Dublin

Some cities have literary scenes. Dublin has a literary bloodstream — Joyce and Wilde, Eavan Boland, Anne Enright, and Sally Rooney — and for one week in May 2027, you'll write in the middle of it alongside three of the most celebrated authors working today. Marie-Helene Bertino is a Guggenheim Fellow whose novel Beautyland won the American Book Award and whose latest collection, Exit Zero, was Electric Literature's #1 short story collection of 2025. Chloé Cooper Jones is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and the author of the acclaimed memoir Easy Beauty. Thao Thai's debut novel, Banyan Moon, was a Read with Jenna pick and a Book of the Month selection. This is the faculty. Now imagine your pages in front of them.

Writing Workshops Dublin brings fiction and nonfiction writers together for an intensive week of workshops, craft seminars, and in-depth conversations about the craft and business of writing — all in the heart of literary Dublin. The program is intentionally small — every cohort is capped at 10 writers — and for 2027, there are two ways in. Our fiction workshop with Thao Thai and nonfiction workshop with Chloé Cooper Jones follow our classic model: you'll submit two completed pieces, one workshopped by your cohort and instructor, the other reserved for your private one-on-one conference. And new for Dublin: Marie-Helene Bertino's Fiction Master Class & Generative Seminar, where you'll submit one piece for a one-on-one critique with Marie — and spend your class sessions writing new work through her craft lectures and generative sessions. Daily craft talks, led by faculty and program staff, are open to everyone.

This week is for writers who are serious about the work — writers who want to strengthen their voice, deepen their understanding of craft, and leave with a clearer path to publication. You don't need an MFA or a publishing credit to apply. You need pages you care about and the willingness to make them better in the company of writers who care just as much.

Since 2016, our mission has been to bring your writing out of the wilderness and into community. And for one week every May, we're convinced there's no better place to do it than on Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey, in a city that has been turning conversation into literature for three hundred years. Scroll down for the full details — and when you're ready, apply for 2027.

Fáilte! Applications for our May 2027 Dublin workshops are open. Cohorts are capped at 10 writers each and fill on a rolling basis — early applications are strongly encouraged.

Applications Are Now Open!

2027 Workshop Dates:

May 2nd - May 7th, 2027

Though our admissions process is competitive and the quality of writing high, all interested writers are encouraged to apply.

2027 Dublin Workshop Faculty:

Fiction Instructor Marie-Helene Bertino is the author of three novels and two short story collections—most recently, Exit Zero, Electric Literature‘s #1 short story collection of 2025. Her novel Beautyland was an American Book Award winner, a National Book Critics Circle Finalist, a New York Times Notable 100, and a Time Magazine Top 10 Book of 2024. Bertino is the recipient of two O. Henry Prizes, the Pushcart Prize, and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Fellowship in Cork, Ireland. She is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Fiction and the Ritvo-Slifka Writer-in-Residence at Yale University.
Nonfiction Instructor Chloé Cooper Jones is a professor, journalist, and the author of the memoir Easy Beauty, which was named a best book of 2022 by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, TIME Magazine, and was a finalist for the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Memoir. She was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist in Feature Writing in 2020. She is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant recipient, a Howard Foundation Fellow, and an Associate Professor of Writing and Director of the MFA Nonfiction Concentration at Columbia University. She splits her time between Brooklyn and Kerhonkson, New York.
Fiction Workshop Instructor Thao Thai is the author of Banyan Moon, the July 2023 Read with Jenna title, Barnes & Noble Discover Pick, and Book of the Month selection. A recipient of the 2024 Ohio Arts Council’s Individual Excellence Award, her work has been published in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Southern Living, Elle, Lit Hub, and other publications. She holds an MFA from The Ohio State University and an MA from the University of Chicago. She also publishes romance novels under the pen name Nora Nguyen, and her debut novel was named one of NPR's 2024 Best Books of the Year and Amazon's Editor's Picks.

Lodging at Iveagh Garden Hotel

Your own room — no roommate lottery, no shared bath — at the four-star Iveagh Garden Hotel, steps from Grafton Street and the gardens the hotel is named for. It's Europe's first fully sustainable hotel, which we love, but here's what you'll notice: you're in the heart of literary Dublin, breakfast is included every morning, and when the day's workshop ends, everything worth walking to is already outside your door. Your room and daily breakfast are included in tuition for all six days and five nights.

How the Workshop Works

For 2027, Dublin offers two workshop formats. Choose the one that matches where your writing is right now.

The Workshops — Fiction with Thao Thai · Nonfiction with Chloé Cooper Jones

Every writer arrives with two completed pieces of writing, each up to 5,000 words (for a total of 10,000 words). The first is workshopped live by your cohort and your instructor — ten writers at most, around one table, giving your pages the kind of sustained attention they can't get anywhere else. The second piece is reserved for your private one-on-one conference with your workshop leader, a meeting that past participants consistently call the most valuable of the week. This is the format for writers with pages in hand who want rigorous, focused feedback from every direction.

The Fiction Master Class & Generative Seminar — with Marie-Helene Bertino

New for Dublin 2027. You'll submit one completed piece of up to 5,000 words before the retreat, and Marie will discuss it with you in a private one-on-one conference. But your class sessions are devoted to something else: making new work. Each day, Marie teaches a craft lecture to her cohort of 10, then leads generative writing sessions where you put the idea on the page immediately, in the city that gave us Joyce and Beckett. You won't spend the week defending old pages. You'll go home able to say: I wrote this in Dublin.

Around both formats, the week fills in the same way: daily craft talks led by faculty and program staff, seminars on the business of writing, and optional afternoon excursions through the city and countryside.

(exact start times of events may change slightly, a finalized schedule will be sent out a few weeks before the workshop)

Included Optional Evening Activities

If you are able, we encourage you to attend our afternoon activities (activities are included in the cost of the workshop, but everyone will be responsible for covering their own dinner and drinks). We will meet in the lobby of The Iveagh Garden Hotel for the start of each activity.

LITERARY PUB CRAWL (MONDAY)

Get a taste of literary Dublin by touring its pubs! The literary pub crawl will take us to many of Dublin’s most historic and famous pubs that were frequented by some of Ireland's most celebrated writers and literary figures, such as Joyce, Wilde, Behan and many more. During the tour, professional actors will share stories and anecdotes about the writers and their connection to the pubs, as well as the rich history of Dublin and Ireland. You'll also get to taste some of the city's famous beers and whiskies and perhaps even hear a bit of live Irish music.

HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR (TUESDAY)

See the sites of Dublin with Historical Walking Tours of Dublin, the city’s longest-established walking tour. This two-hour walk will take you past all the major sites in Central Dublin, presented by a witty and entertaining guide. The walk will go rain or shine, so have an umbrella ready just in case…this is Ireland after all.

VISIT TO HOWTH (WEDNESDAY)

Howth, a picturesque coastal village, captivates visitors with its stunning landscapes, rugged cliffs, and a bustling harbor. Steeped in literary history, Howth served as a muse for esteemed writers like W.B. Yeats and James Joyce, who found inspiration in its enchanting scenery and incorporated the village into their works, adding a touch of literary magic to this charming destination. A shuttle will pick us up from the hotel. When we arrive in Howth, you will have the option to either take a boat tour, or go for a hike. Both activities will proceed rain or shine. We will then reconvene as a group for dinner at Beshoffs Sea Grill, before heading back to Dublin.

ONE PAGE SALON (THURSDAY)

On our final night together we will gather in the Black Door Bar inside the Harcourt Hotel for a reading and toast starting at 3:45 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to read a one-page sample of their work, and it does not have to be something you workshopped.

3-Day Southwest Ireland Add-On,  May 7 - 10, 2027

The workshop ends Friday morning. Ireland doesn't have to. After breakfast, we'll leave Dublin behind and drive southwest into County Kerry — the Ireland of postcards and poems — with three nights at Ard Na Sidhe, a four-star country house hotel on the shores of Lough Caragh whose name means "Hill of the Fairies." They're not overselling it.

Friday: Arrival at Ard Na Sidhe Hotel

After breakfast on Friday morning, we'll set off on a scenic drive to the Southwest of Ireland. Our destination: the idyllic Ard Na Sidhe Hotel, a prestigious 4-star haven nestled in the picturesque Irish countryside. The afternoon is yours to explore the expansive estate. Here, dinner transforms into a culinary delight in the lap of luxury.

Saturday: Adventure Through the Gap of Dunloe and Dinner in Killorglin

Saturday promises a day of adventure and discovery as we take a tour of the stunning Gap of Dunloe. The journey begins with a visit to Ross Castle, a majestic 15th-century tower house on the shores of Lough Leane. From here, we'll take a scenic boat ride to the charming Lord Brandon’s Cottage, where you'll have a chance to immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.
Our adventure continues through the rugged landscapes of the Gap of Dunloe, a breathtaking mountain pass. The day's journey culminates at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, a historic spot perfect for relaxation and reflection.

That evening, we’ll head to the lively town of Killorglin, where we’ll stroll through its charming streets before savoring a delicious dinner.

Sunday: Exploring the Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head

On Sunday, we will embark on an enchanting full-day exploration of the Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head. Our journey will be led by local guides who will reveal the beauty of the countryside with the insight only a native can offer. Throughout the day, we will experience the dramatic, rugged coastline, taking in the spectacular ocean views from the cliff roads and the sweeping sands of Inch Beach. We will marvel at the vistas from Slea Head—the most westerly point in Ireland, where it's said the next parish over is America—and enjoy stunning views of the offshore Blasket Islands.

The region's ancient history will come alive as we explore historic settlements and monuments, including the 6th-century Beehive Huts and the monastic church at Gallarus Oratory. Our scenic drive will also take us through the village of Annascaul, famous as the home of the legendary Arctic explorer Tom Crean. Additionally, we will have ample opportunity to wander the streets of Dingle, one of Ireland's most beloved towns, enjoying its magnificent array of quaint shops, galleries, restaurants, and traditional Irish pubs before returning to our hotel.

Monday: Return to Dublin

She was the reason I registered for the Dublin workshop in the first place and I have absolutely no regrets. I would absolutely recommend it for someone looking for inspiration and to bring life back to their work. The organization and communication; the workshops, craft talks and one-on-one; the hikes, tours, and meals--all exceeded my expectations. I've taken many workshops, including an MFA program. Ethan Joella was an outstanding workshop leader--approachable, mindful about time, and generous with craft tips. He was even better as an editor on my workshop piece and during our one-on-one. I will never forget what I gained during that short week, and will keep in touch with so many of the people I met. Thank you for an incredible experience!" -Anne H.

"I arrived in Dublin for the Writing Workshop a little uncertain about how it was going to work. It was my first time in a nonfiction workshop, and I only knew one other person. The experience exceeded my expectations: the meticulous planning and organization, the participants, and particularly, the instructors. Diana Spechler (my nonfiction workshop instructor) was a joy: straight-forward, knowledgeable, supportive and accessible. I left with a solid sense of how to approach my nonfiction work, but more importantly, I greatly appreciated Diana's support of my work in general. I would recommend the Writing Workshop in Dublin to anyone who wants to combine a week of exploration, history, new friends, and terrific instruction ." -Joanna S.

As organizers, Blake and Mike cover all the bases so attendees can totally relax in the environment and focus on writing and group connections. The overall experience, the inclusion of food and housing, the community that was built, the work we did -- thumbs up on everything!" -Catherine V.

"Best experience I've had as a writer. I have done writing workshops before, but nothing like this one. I received genuinely transformative feedback, knowledge, and social support around my writing and novel. I will always be grateful for all I gained, learned, and experienced in this workshop. I can wholeheartedly say that the amateur writer who came into this workshop is now a tremendously evolved amateur writer with a new lens on transferring thought into text. I learned so much about my own craft, and how to tailor the style, and plot points to better suit the story I want to tell. The adventures, authors, experiences, feedback, people, places and workshops were gratifyingly high quality. It felt safe being an amateur. I received transformative feedback on my current WIP which has greatly shifted the ways I write." -Enrique E.

Workshop tuition for the May 2–7, 2027 program includes the components listed on this page: lodging at Iveagh Garden Hotel, daily breakfast, small-group class sessions, craft and business-of-writing seminars, optional afternoon activities, and instructor feedback on your writing, delivered according to your cohort's format. In the Fiction Workshop and Nonfiction Workshop, each writer submits two completed pieces: one is workshopped live by your cohort and instructor, and the second is discussed in your one-on-one conference with your workshop leader. In the Fiction Master Class & Generative Seminar, each writer submits one completed piece of up to 5,000 words, which is discussed in your one-on-one conference with your instructor; class sessions consist of craft lectures and generative writing sessions rather than group workshopping of submissions. The Southwest Ireland add-on (May 7–10, 2027) is a separate, optional purchase with its own inclusions as described on this page.
