Read an Interview with Evan on using Dungeons & Dragons to Help Write Your Novel.

Join us for an adventure where the journey through your novel becomes as thrilling as a Dungeons & Dragons campaign!

Are you a fiction writer working on a novel, or someone who loves the rich world-building and dynamic storytelling of Dungeons & Dragons? This unique 15-week workshop, led by writer and editor Evan Fleischer, will guide you in harnessing the creative power of Dungeons & Dragons to develop your novel's characters, plot, and world.

Evan brings his expertise in storytelling to this innovative course. Through the structured gameplay of Dungeons & Dragons, you'll explore new ways to expand your characters, deepen your narrative, and make your fictional world more immersive. The game’s collaborative nature will allow you to experience character choices and plot twists in real-time, offering a living study of narrative structures.

By the end of the workshop, you will have made significant progress on your novel, with characters that feel almost as real as the people around you and a story world that is rich and engaging.

Reading material will include: Meander, Spiral, Explode: Design and Pattern in Narrative by Jane Allison; A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin; "From Elfland to Poughkeepsie" by Ursula K. LeGuin. Note: this reading list is subject to change.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of your characters, treating them as fully realized individuals.
  • Enhance your appreciation of the interplay between character development, worldbuilding, and plot progression.
  • Leave the workshop with a substantial portion of your novel underway.

Given the highly interactive and student-driven nature of this course, which blends tabletop roleplaying with writing workshops, a detailed outline will be created after the first class meeting. This ensures that the course content is tailored to the specific needs and goals of the small group of no more than 7 writers.

*We will skip select holiday weeks, and this class will conclude in February 2025.
