Instructor Hillary Leftwich is a neurodivergent, multi-media writer and the author of Ghosts Are Just Strangers Who Know How to Knock (Agape Editions, 2023), Aura (Future Tense Books, 2022), and Saint Dymphna’s Playbook (Limit Zero/University of Hell Press 2025). She teaches creative writing, business writing, environmental writing, and environmental storytelling at several universities, writing organizations, and nonprofits for adults, previously incarcerated and hospitalized youth, and unhoused populations. She centers her writing around themes of class struggle, the impact of disease, ritual, and the supernatural. On the outskirts of the writing world, she is a professional Tarot reader and death worker. 

Who is this class for?

This course is for writers in any genre who want to explore Tarot as a creative framework to deepen and expand their writing practice. Open to all levels, with a basic familiarity with Tarot and access to a Tarot or Oracle deck is recommended.

What to expect:

This 4-week intensive focuses on Tarot archetypes as guides into intimacy, risk, and what’s often left unsaid.

Through cards like The Lovers, The Devil, and The Moon, participants will generate bold new work exploring eros, taboo, power, and tenderness with both craft and care.

What are the writing goals for this class?

In this course, students will generate 4–6 new short works (flash, lyric, or hybrid), engage directly with themes of desire, power, and risk, and learn revision strategies for handling charged material with precision and care.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1: The Lovers — Attraction and Vulnerability

We’ll use The Lovers card to write into desire, choice, and intimacy. Students will generate short pieces that explore duality and the tension between connection and independence. 

Week 2: The Devil — Obsession and Taboo

Through The Devil archetype, we’ll write toward shadow, obsession, and transgression. Students will practice harnessing taboo subjects with restraint and intensity, using omission to build tension. 

Week 3: Strength — Power and Tenderness

The Strength card guides us into questions of control, vulnerability, and care. Students will generate pieces that balance repetition, restraint, and tenderness while examining how power dynamics shape intimacy. 

Week 4: The Moon — Mystery and the Unspoken

We’ll close with The Moon as a lens for ambiguity, dream logic, and the unconscious. Students will practice sequencing their strongest pieces into a mini-cycle, leaving with a foundation for future revision and submission.
