Writing Workshops New Orleans February 2027

New Orleans was made for storytellers.

This is the city of Tennessee Williams and Anne Rice, of Kate Chopin and Sarah M. Broom, of Faulkner House Books tucked into Pirate's Alley, of jazz funerals and second lines, and a culture so steeped in narrative that it shaped American literature itself. New Orleans has always been a place where the past breathes through the present, where stories live in the architecture and the air, and for five nights in February 2027, we're bringing our most intimate retreat program back to the Garden District.

Led by Ethan Joella, Amber Sparks, and Mira Ptacin, Writing Workshops New Orleans brings together fiction and nonfiction writers for an intensive week of workshops, craft seminars, one-on-one conferences, and in-depth conversations about the craft and business of writing.

Our program is intentionally small: two fiction cohorts and one nonfiction cohort, each capped at 10 writers, led by three of the most distinctive voices working in American literature today.

How the Week Works

Every writer in the program submits two completed pieces of writing before arrival. The first is workshopped by your cohort and instructor. The second goes into your private one-on-one conference with your workshop leader — time set aside just for you and your work.

Daily craft talks are open to all participants. Optional afternoon seminars go deep on specific elements of craft and the writing life. Evenings belong to the group: a welcome happy hour on Sunday, a walking tour of the Garden District on Monday, a cohort dinner on Tuesday, a Steamboat Natchez cruise down the Mississippi on Wednesday, and a final reading and happy hour on Thursday to close out the week.

This is not a large conference. There are no panels of strangers, no name tags on lanyards. There are 30 writers and three extraordinary teachers, spending a week together in one of America's most storied literary cities.

Applications for our February 2027 Workshops are Open!

Workshop Dates:

February 21-26, 2027

Though our admissions process is competitive and the quality of writing high, all interested writers are encouraged to apply.

The experience exceeded my expectations: the meticulous planning and organization, the participants, and particularly, the instructors. Diana Spechler (my nonfiction workshop instructor) was a joy: straight-forward, knowledgeable, supportive and accessible. I left with a solid sense of how to approach my nonfiction work, but more importantly, I greatly appreciated Diana's support of my work in general. I would recommend the Writing Workshop in Dublin to anyone who wants to combine a week of exploration, history, new friends, and terrific instruction ." -Joanna S.
