Led by Paulina Pinsky, writer, educator, and writing coach. She is the co-author of It Doesn't Have To Be Awkward, a teen guide to consent, forthcoming from HMH this September. Her personal essays have been featured in NarrativelyHuman PartsSlackjaw HumorColumbia Journal, and HuffPo Women, among others.

Elaine Scarry wrote, “to have great pain is to have certainty; to hear that another person has pain is to have doubt." Why is the pain of another intangible? Does one have to experience something themselves in order to believe it? Or do we, as writers and readers, gain access to lived experiences that vary from our own?

How does one conjure the lived experience of living in a body on the page? The sensations of living in a body-- pain, pleasure, desire-- define our day-to-day lives. And yet, the way to illustrate that reality is illusive.

In this four week workshop, we will focus on three themes: Pain, Sexuality, and Hunger. Through exploring various texts and writing pieces that focus on the sensation of living in a body, each student will gain deeper insight into how to conjure the body in their writing, no matter the genre.

We’ll meet weekly on Zoom for two hours-- one hour of discussion, one hour of workshop. Prepare for this course to be reading and discussion heavy.

Additionally, expect to walk away having workshopped one piece. Through vigorous discussion and reading examples, writers will gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which they explore their own bodily experience, in addition to new ways to diversify their perspective.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:
  • Students will walk away with a sound understanding of various ways to render the body: metaphorically, symbolically, and realistically.
  • Students will have the opportunity to workshop up to twenty pages.
  • Students will gain a clearer and stronger sense of their writing sensibilities, in addition to direction on how to further strengthen their craft.
